Re: Engineers dominate early retirement group

If you saw the Retirement Investing Thread, you read that some eventually tire of the leisurely life.

Agree. I can imagine I may want to return as an engineer in some capacity in the future, so no bridges will be burned. I have hired [more]

Re: Engineers dominate early retirement group

In my case I have been working at the same company for the past ~18 years. I started as a new grad with the long term goal of retiring early. I've moved up the career ladder and now manage a dept of ~20 mechanical engineers at about 5X my original [more]

Re: How to retire in your 30s

Most of my fellow engineers never saved enough to retire, even at age 60.

As I catatonically walk around at my job sitting on well over $1E6 secretly awaiting my departure later this year, I can only imagine the wealth I would obtain [more]

Re: How to retire in your 30s

Interesting discussion. I'm an engineer, 41 years old, and "retiring" later this year. I'm married with a stay at home mom with 2 kids in elementary school. Perhaps that's why I couldn't retire in my 30's.

Math is likely a big part [more]

How many men-vs-women will become waitstaff?

Beauty, conversational skills, and memory win out in this trade... so likely very few men would qualify.

Re: Housing in San Fran East Bay - Rates/Price.etc.

I've been living in the bay area for nearly 20 years and watched the housing market go through large swings. I believe pricing is largely driven by the local tech economy. Right now Twitter, Google, Facebook, Apple, etc all are expanding/hiring like [more]

Re: Due Diligence

We do need to get back to the pension system, utilizing features in the 401(k) program, and make it open it to the marketplace.

Or perhaps tweak the 401k regulations to minimize shenanigans.

Re: Due Diligence

No... it is tax deferred, not tax free.

You understand correctly. The growth is tax free, (that is no tax friction when one buys and sells) but yes taxes on entire amount must be paid later. I explained this in the post [more]

Re: Due Diligence

being "100% vested" in your OWN money is irrelevant. You'd be 100% vested in it had you never contributed it to the plan

Re: Due Diligence

Not at all true. The amount deferred into a 401(k) plan by the employee/participant is ALWAYS 100% vested. The amount of any employer contributions (match, profit sharing, or whatever they call it) can be subject to a vesting schedule of up to 6 [more]

Lot's of great points....

Yes, you have to wait until age 65. I may not want to wait that long. One has access to a 401k at age 59.5.

Even better, with a 401k one can actually access the funds penalty free before 59.5 [more]

Re: Due Diligence

The ONLY issue is one of keeping track of it, and knowing when you can get it. Not a problem, really....
