Re: Slightly OT? Passports and expiration dates

It is iffy, and not worth the risk for the cost of a passport.

Re: Poll: How often do you replace couches/sofas

Being that my mom is a Keeper Of Things, furniture is something that comes into our family and doesn't leave. The oldest sofa in the family is well over 100 years old. (And small and uncomfortable.)

Comfortable furniture is used. [more]

That's a good reason to have electronic statements and online bill pay. You don't have to worry about closing bills being forwarded.

Re: Poll: How often do you replace couches/sofas?

I have a couch that is 34 years old. It is the living room, and rarely used.

The couch in the family room was replaced around 10-15 years ago, and we will probably replace it in the next few years.

I also wonder how many of those are from people who just don't keep track of paying their bills and therefore just don't pay them on time

Re: Wash sale

If you rebuy within 30 days after the sale day, it is a wash sale. Rebuying within a tax advantage account means that the loss can never be used as a tax deduction. Don't do it.

Very sad for an individual unable to pay off such a sum over, say, a year's time or so, but as a national issue, not such a crisis. Or am I missing something?

Re: 52 week challenge - week 26 - vkg

What a terrible week! How is your MIL doing after her stroke? Is she on a blood thinner or low-dose Aspirin? Is she back at home with her husband or other caregiver?

She is home. Caregiver schedule has been setup, and will need [more]

With the storage unit, I am not certain which is annoying me more, the fact that it was broken into or that we are paying $300 a month for stuff that wasn't deemed worth stealing.

Re: 52 week challenge - week 26 - vkg

There are some weeks that are best forgotten: MIL had a stroke, my husband is sick (probably reoccurrence of flu from exhaustion) and storage unit was broken into.

Re: LBYM garbage disposal deodorizor

I don't want grease to go down my drain, even with a garbage disposal, and fruit/veggie peelings I want to go in my compost.

If you have a good quality garbage disposal, they rarely break. Cleaning isn't that much of an issue. [more]

Insulating roof

Does insulating the inside of the roof in addition to standard attic insulation help? In theory, it should help lower the temperature in the attic, but it is rarely done.

Do you mean baking soda? I use baking soda, followed by vinegar, followed by boiling water.

Yes, baking soda. It fizzes nicely, but doesn't seem to do much.

Re: Credit score

Foreclosure, I'm pretty sure that's like other public records and it could be 10 years, but check your state law on that one.

Foreclosures are the same as other credit which is 7 years. Bankruptcy and liens report for 10 years.

Re: Credit score

I never checked the score before, so I don't know exactly what it was when it wasn't a problem. Maybe in the upper 700s or over 800. I always paid bills on time. Doing that right now too. But the damage was done from about 3 years ago until last [more]

Re: Garbage disposal

The simplest is to try flushing the garbage disposal with boiling water. Citrus rinds either lemon or orange also work well. I haven't found vinegar with or without baking powder to be completely effective.
