Re: Water company service plan for mains

Around here, pretty much any sewer project is going to run $6,000 to $25,000, depending on what city you live in and where your main is. $600 would pay for a power snake of your sewer line but that's about it.

I suppose the worthwhileness of [more]

Re: Front loaders vs. top loaders

This is based on my understanding/stuff I've heard so take it with a grain of salt.

Front-loaders have always been more efficient than top loaders. There is some inevitable tradeoff between efficiency, up-front price, and cleaning power. So [more]

For one thing, a passport won't fit in a money belt

Maybe it won't fit in your money belt, but my money belt is quite capable of holding as many as three passports.

You can't leave your passport at the hotel when you're [more]

Re: Toilet flange question

I called a plumber. They couldn't come out until yesterday, three days after I called. My three year old daughter was eager to get her bathroom back but she managed to be patient.

He listened to my story, looked at my "as good a plan as [more]

Re: Toilet flange question

But hey, it's not all y'all's fault that I've got baggage about contractors. Thanks for your advice. If anyone has any thoughts about the DIY route, or any other advice for hiring reliable contractors and getting them to stand behind their work, I'd [more]

Re: airport security -- the old days

Do you mean in the US? Of course US had security before 9/11. It was more or less the same as it is now. You put your bags on a belt to be x-rayed, and walked through a metal detector. Back then it was done by third-party companies hired by the [more]

Re: Toilet flange question

At that rate, if you spend more than seven hours going back and forth to the home improvement store, doing the work, and cleaning up after yourself (and at this point, it sounds like you have), then you're not doing yourself any favors by [more]

Re: Toilet flange question

A plumber would charge me $200 for a few minutes of work. And, in my experience, there's still a 50% chance they'll do it wrong, and if they do, an 80% chance they won't stand behind their own work.

Toilet flange question

I (probably) improperly installed a wax ring last summer. You only get one shot and I missed, but I didn't get a new ring and try again. That's my guess anyways.

I have removed the toilet, wax ring, vinyl plank flooring, and cut out a 2x2 [more]

Re: Neighbor doing sewer work on my property

Well, it was definitely a flipper. The house was put back on the market on Friday with a list price $185k higher than its previous purchase price. I already knew, though, because people who are remodeling a house for themselves usually don't pay for [more]

Re: Fridge Again

Depends on your electricity rates and on the state of the door seal. You can run the numbers. Depending on the model, your rates and how much the door seal has deterioated, annual electricity costs could be anywhere between 5% and 30% of the cost [more]

Re: Fridge Again

Replying to my own question...
EnergyStar recommends replacing a fridge if it was manufactured before 1993.

Re: Fridge Again

Refrigerators and freezers from the 90s consume a hideous amount of electricity. Not only are they not worth repairing, they're usually not even worth keeping unless you have extremely low electricity rates.

So if I have a fridge from [more]

Neighbor doing sewer work on my property

I came home yesterday to a card from a construction company to talk about "the sewer project." The house next to ours was recently sold and based on what I saw during the estate sale, whoever purchased it is probably going to be doing a lot [more]
