Sorry I wasn't able to continue with this long-ago thread. Life's been full of the challenges that leave far less time for these discussion boards.

Re: New York Period?

Sometimes, simplicity and aesthetics overrule strict punctuation rules. It's not causing any confusion. There is no reason to insert the periods.

Re: New York Period?

In Saturday's NYT crossword, one clue asked for a controversial grammar question. And the answer was.....Oxford comma! I'd never in a million years have gotten it if this discussion hadn't come up.

Re: Speaking of New York press...

I don't read the "New Yorker," and didn't know their approach to a repeated vowel in which each is part of separate syllables. And I guess I haven't encountered it elsewhere. I did learn from my erstwhile copy editor, though, that the [more]

A style-sheet produced at Oxford says you should....

Re: We have a break through!

The good news is that yesterday, J signed her medical POA to D. Now, at least, the decisions will be made by someone who is actually in the room with her and knows what's going on.

Re: New York Period?

I think that S.&P. 500 looks ugly and unwieldy, and the periods should be dispensed with. Or it should be given room to breathe, ie, S. & P. 500. But the condensed version is easier for the eye to put together. I opt for S&P 500, just as [more]

I share some of your dissatisfactions with the conventional approach to healthcare, but I think you're mixing several issues here that aren't really related. The low probability of negative research [more]

He got some fuzzy instructions from the home healthcare nurse. MDH started on a 2 mg dose. After the first blood check for INR, she said to take 2.5 - no units. MDH was pretty out of it w/ pain meds and took 2.5 tablets, which upped the dose to 3 [more]
