Re: Whole Foods Overcharging in NYC

The store I do most of my shopping in still has scales in the produce section and also in the bulk food section. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Records Retention

I'm going through old boxes of records to clear out some storage space.

How long should I keep copies of old insurance policies? I'm primarily thinking about auto, home and umbrella. The adjuster in me says to keep them for a couple years [more]

Re: Combining budgets

We mostly said our joint expenses are X and our joint income is Y. Most of the time our income was about 60% mine and 40% his, although sometimes it was the other way around. So I would put 60% of X into the shared account and he would put 40% in. We [more]

IRL on the Phone

If you are going to cold call me about a meeting about my timeshare, it would be better if you got my name right. It's not that tough and if you are from the company that my time share is with, you would have the correct last name - all four [more]

Carpet Padding

Yesterday, we ripped out the carpet on the main floor. The living room and dining room carpet had been replaced maybe 20 years ago, but the carpet in the two other downstairs rooms was not.

We found oak floors in the living, dining and [more]

Re: Update

I've never run it, but it's on my list. The last two years I've had a last minute offer to be on a Portland to Coast Walking Team, but had to decline because of prior commitments.

Re: Continuing but not succeeding

When I have a goal things happen. When there isn't a firm goal, I procrastinate. A schedule might help.

Piggybacking on your thread.

I have scheduled a wine party at my house in August. I have 9 weeks to get things organized [more]

Re: Ramifications for Colombian Bank Acct?

Also look into what the tax treaties are between the two countries. That will determine how income and taxes will be treated if it is taxable in both countries.

I've sold books through half.com before, and some of these will be posted there. The collectibles will do better on eBay. DH had a lot of railroad books, many limited editions and going for $100 or more. I'll also be [more]

I've also been spending a few minutes a day sorting and handling the mail as it comes in. So that seems under control.

Right now I'm stressing out about having the carpet ripped out on Tuesday. That gives me 2 more days to deal with things [more]

Re: $400 emergency without borrowing money?

Assuming a wide spread disaster, how many people here could lay their hands on say $400 cash money?

Several years ago, I started accumulating a stash of small bills for this reason. Nothing larger than a $20 and mostly $1s and $5s. I [more]

Re: Capital Gains and sale of Home

As a practical matter, it doesn't make a difference, since the house doesn't have enough value to meet even one exemption, much less two. But we also only paid $58K for it 33 years ago. I've seen a couple tax returns where it did make a difference, [more]

Re: Capital Gains and sale of Home

Also, no divorce planned after 23 years together. ;-)

But what about death? If I sold the house this year, I'd have a $250K exemption for me and another $250K for DH. If I sold the house next year, I'd only have a $250K exemption for [more]

Re: Home Inspection

Thanks, LakeD. I'm the kind of person who gets very methodical when things get in crisis mode. Through most of this I've been saying that I will probably fall apart later, but I don't have time right now. Good days, bad days, one step at a time.

Okay, I'm new to this board and dealing with house things.

Re: Tracking Expenses

Well, if I didn't buy it this month from that winery, I would never be able to afford to buy it in the future. 6 bottles on futures at $31 each. If they have any available when it is released in 2016 it will probably cost $50 or more each. I've been [more]
