Re: Buying a Toilet

I don't have a dual flush, but do like the Toto brand we installed several years ago. It does have the rounded bowl which was needed in our tiny bathroom. With an extended oval one, it would have been to close to the tub.

Re: Retirement

When my last "real" job left me, I ended up going to tax school, getting my Oregon Tax Preparers license and working 15-20 hours a week during the next tax season. I thought that if I found a real job I could just work part time. I never [more]

Re: Using those fuel points

So, I looked to see where I was after yesterday's purchases. There isn't a Fuel Station near me, so I usually only use points when I know I'll be close to a station. Just for kicks, I checked the price at the closest Shell station that also accepts [more]

Re: DH's BP

I pulled out my old copy of the DASH book, and while there are a lot of things included that I wouldn't eat now (margarine, for example) I was struck by their salt recommendations. basically, if a dish had under 10% of DV of sodium, it was considered [more]

Re: a real budget

My sports/fitness category would probably be better named training/races since it's almost all training for and competing in half marathons and marathons. Mostly walking.

Re: a real budget

I put anything I buy at the grocery store in as groceries. That includes food for me, food/litter for the zoo and sundries such as toilet paper/cleaning supplies/etc.

Eating out and wine are part of my entertainment budget. Actually, they [more]

Utilization and Pay Down

I've been thinking about pay down order on credit cards lately after reading various recent posts. I'll admit mine crept up more than I'd like over the winter from medical expenses/final expenses and now taking care of a lot of deferred maintenance. [more]

Cleaning Supplies

Okay, I assume the reason they tell you to use clean WHITE cleaning cloths is to show you how dirty things were, so you won't let it go so long next time. I think they are right. Yuk!

Re: Take Motivation from my Misery

Yikes. Just in case you aren't aware, if you reach the max on charitable contributions on taxes, the excess does carry over to future years.

Re: Whole Foods Overcharging in NYC

The store I do most of my shopping in still has scales in the produce section and also in the bulk food section. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Records Retention

I'm going through old boxes of records to clear out some storage space.

How long should I keep copies of old insurance policies? I'm primarily thinking about auto, home and umbrella. The adjuster in me says to keep them for a couple years [more]

Re: Combining budgets

We mostly said our joint expenses are X and our joint income is Y. Most of the time our income was about 60% mine and 40% his, although sometimes it was the other way around. So I would put 60% of X into the shared account and he would put 40% in. We [more]

Yesterday, we ripped out the carpet on the main floor. The living room and dining room carpet had been replaced maybe 20 years ago, but the carpet in the two other downstairs rooms was not.

We found oak floors in the living, dining and [more]

Re: Ramifications for Colombian Bank Acct?

Also look into what the tax treaties are between the two countries. That will determine how income and taxes will be treated if it is taxable in both countries.
