The cash flow from the two are not the same. The need to pay the car loan on an amortization schedule more than trumps the income one would receive from the CD.

Back in the 1990s, I had 5 year CDs at my CU paying 8.25%. When I went to buy a car, the same CU had car loans at 5.75% Instead of cashing out my CDs to buy a car, I just took out a car loan.
