Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

warrl: You're very lucky. For most folks, the only options for high speed are the cable company (Time Warner, Comcast, Cox), or the phone company (AT&T, Verizon), and that's it. Two. Most folks wouldn't call that competition, which is why panic [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

That's obviously unenforceable. They'll take what they want from the government, then go crying to the court that the state law infringes their protected free speech.

Maybe, maybe not... it's hardly a state law that would be limiting [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

Another FCC decision that may be more far-reaching was issued at the same time but isn't getting the media coverage. It could actually bring competition into the ISP space, and if there's one thing monopolists hate it's [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

Someone mentioned that the last mile was where throttling was happening. This is not correct.
Don't remember this being brought up, though I did make a reference early in the thread about how Netflix was being hit-upon by last-mile [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

What was the reason for the Federal intervention again?

Market consolidation and anti-competitive behavior has resulted in America falling behind in both the availability and affordability of high-speed net connections.

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

It is the same outcome that always happens with central planning.... everyone is equaly miserable, and you aren't allowed to pay any amount of money to the telco to make a specific service work better for someone.

Actually, you (the [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

Last time I checked, I am paying my ISP so I have access to any site I want, not for them to patronise me (or erect their own toll gates as they please).

Exactly, and as I said, that's one of the things the FCC has been trying to put [more]

Re: OT: Net Neutrality question

Does this mean that providers will no longer be able to charge customers based on downstream speeds?

No. We, as end users, are paying for the usage of a certain size, "last mile" pipe. What the FCC is saying is that the [more]

Re: Stock buy backs killing economy

The stock price shouldn't rise because of stock buybacks.

Yes and no... it shouldn't rise as a direct effect of the buybacks, but as a secondary effect, as investors will know that the company has put a floor underneath a certain [more]

If that was the case, then the repurchased shares would simply be retired, rather than held in treasury.

But at least by retiring the shares, it would be a legitimate increase in the EPS. I would imagine it would also better allow [more]

Re: Stock buy backs killing economy

they can now simply manipulate their EPS by reducing the number of shares outstanding.

Which begs the very simple question... Why is EPS allowed to be calculated based on shares outstanding, and not all shares in existence?
