Mike Fee

I am originally from St. Paul, MN. After graduating from DePaul University in Chicago, IL in 2006, I spent a few years in the banking industry. Deciding it was time to explore new opportunities, I moved to Bangkok, Thailand. Unable to find a job in my field, I became a kindergarten English teacher for nearly 4 years, while attending MBA classes in the evening at Webster University (Thailand campus). Currently, I am an intern at The American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and I am expected to graduate in summer, 2014. Despite a 12-hour time difference, I still follow the markets every day and love reading interesting articles and stories. I have been following the Motley Fool for more than 12 years, so I figured it's time to start writing!

An Interview with mikefee

Last updated: 6/6/2014
The Fool:
Briefly review your favorite book.
mikefee:
"Shantaram" by David Gregory Roberts. The most wanted criminal in Australia escapes a maximum security prison during the day and flees to India, where he enters the dark underground world of smuggling, drug dealing, and gun running. This is a true 900+ page story, but written as a novel by the author that experienced it.
The Fool:
How'd you find out about the Fool? (Make your answer as colorful and truthful as possible.)
mikefee:
I have been following the Motley Fool for more than 12 years, when I first picked up "The Motley Fool Investment Guide" around 2002. The funny hats on the cover sold me.
The Fool:
What's the most overrated idea, person, or event in our culture?
mikefee:
Warren Buffet is a great investor -- but Peter Lynch is better. Too often, great investors are overlooked because Buffet gets too much credit. I believe he deserves all the praise he receives, but it doesn't leave room to discuss anyone else.

How I Invest

I like growth stocks, but I find the REIT sector to be a bargain as well. Dividends are important for everyone's portfolio. Tech stocks with no long-term debt are always interesting as well. I am fascinated by the life sciences industry (sequencing, genomics, etc.) but there are so few public companies in the space and they are very risky. After a few hard lessons, I learned to stay away from China stocks altogether -- finding American companies that have investments within China are a much safer play.
