Re: Buy, or rent a house?

Situations (and RE markets) vary widely. We jumped from an apartment to a purchased condo in 2002. Rent was going up every year - we had gone from $1k to $1200/month over three years for a 2 bedroom. We locked in a 30 year fixed on a $180k condo with [more]

Re: Battlebots

I'll have to check this out. I watched the old ones, and I'm convinced I have some great ideas for a spinner bot that would be near unbeatable. ;) (I dabbled with robots in college)

Re: a real budget

My only comment is to not sweat the details on the budget categories. My personal budgeting style (and everyone is different) is to use broad categories and not worry about minute details. I'm all about the macro budgeting.

Food for example [more]

Re: Amazon Prime Day

Definitely did not live up to the hype...and we're long term Prime members and frequent Amazon shoppers.

I wasted a few minutes here and there during the day clicking through. 98% of the stuff on sale I wouldn't have bought at any price. The [more]

Re: Umbrella Insurance

Bottom line, how much umbrella insurance should a typical Fool carry?

I believe my umbrella policy is currently $3M. It requires either $100/$300 or $200/$500 limits on my auto insurance, so there's a hidden cost, but the actual [more]

Re: doing some thinking

Sassy/SlowLearner,

Like ThyPeace said, you'll find many of us have had our own debt issues of varying degrees.

Here's my story: Our highest consumer debt peak was around 2005. We had at least $60k in consumer debt, plus another [more]

I'm so discouraged by your collective comments right now I'm actually in tears.

Please don't be discouraged. I know it can seem pretty overwhelming when everyone is throwing suggestions here and there and it feels like [more]

Re: Gas Mileage

The way to cure tailgaters is to keep going slower and slower and slower until they go around you.

I would also strongly recommend keeping to the right (i.e. the non-passing lane) when you see a faster vehicle coming up behind you. [more]

Re: Car Alarm Weirdness

Jeff, I believe you are in FL. The 3 day rule you are thinking about is for in home sales and gym memberships. There is no 3 day rule for vehicle purchases...not new or used. This is often misunderstood by consumers.

Thanks for the [more]

Re: Successfully repaired AC

Yes but only when it's cool outside... ;)

The tricky thing I found with AC repair is getting access to parts. Most supply houses only sell to the trade, not to the retail public. I was lucky to have a friend who I could go through to get [more]

Successfully repaired AC

Had an AC unit go down this week. Fans were running inside and out, but no cooling - compressor wasn't coming on. Could be any number of things. The house actually has 3 separate ACs, so I was able to keep the house pretty cool using the other two [more]

Re: Car Alarm Weirdness

If I bought a car at Carmax (or anywhere else) and it started acting up the next day, I'd drive it right back down there and ask them to either fix it, or unwind the transaction. I don't know if it's universal, or depends on your state, but here you [more]

Could just be her riding clothes

I agree. A riding cloak would have been very common for the period. Keeps the dust, mud, and muck of the "road" off your fancy clothes.

Where does your mom live? In my climate a permanently bypassed heater core would not be a problem. But that's not an option in many parts of the country.

Re: False tax return filed with your Tax ID number?

I wonder what information, exactly, would need to be redacted from a fraudulent return. Seems to me that if it was my SSN, I should be able to see whatever they filed in my name.

Re: $400 emergency without borrowing money?

Slightly misleading... An additional 28% said they would pay with a credit card, then pay it off when the statement arrived. I put myself squarely in this group. I could pay $400 out of my checking/savings without a second thought, but I'd still [more]

Re: Flexible Savings Account

I think you just answered your own question.

If you're not eligible for an HSA, the FSA is all you get. If your medical expenses exceed a significant % of your AGI, you may get some tax deduction, as mentioned above. That's about it.
