Re: Best running watch you'd recommend?

This is a good thread. I'm still getting by with my 410cx, but it's a little long in the tooth. I'm kinda holding out for a watch can read HR from your wrist, without the chest strap. I know TomTom just released one, don't know if any of the Garmin [more]

Bullet...dodged

My neighbor called me late yesterday afternoon to let me know about a geyser of water shooting up in front of my townhouse that I'm selling - the closing is next Tuesday. Ugh... the last thing I want to do is pump money into it right before I walk [more]

Re: 401k loan to pay off HELOC

First thought....how much of a hardship is it to cashflow the HELOC? Are you just wanting it paid off because you don't like having the debt, or is there are budget crunch? Do you really NEED it gone immediately?

I'm not a huge fan of [more]

Opinions of DirecTV Genie?

Not looking of opinions of competing services. I'm a happy DirecTV customer, currently with multiple DVRs. I'm moving next month, and thinking of upgrading to a whole-home Genie, with minis on several additional TVs.

The early user feedback [more]

Re: Charitable donations

If I had to guess, I'd say around ~2% annually. I don't have exact numbers because I haven't itemized the last couple of years (no state tax and minimal mortgage interest).

Re: A new level of wallpaper evil

Wallpaper is a good reason not to buy a house.

It could be a good reason, if the entire house is covered in it. The house I'm buying has just 1 bedroom with wallpaper installed above the chair rail. That's it. If it doesn't come off [more]

Re: A new level of wallpaper evil

Ugh. That's the worst. There's a small amount of wallpaper in the house I'm buying (we close 7/15). We're also planning to take it out, but I'm pretty certain it was installed by the current owner (not original) and there's a coat of paint [more]

Re: Change a watch battery

I picked up a cheap set of watch tools on Ebay for $8 a few years back. I've used it to resize bands (add/remove links), change batteries, etc. It's come in very handy, money well spent.

Re: 1997 honda accord 155000--reasons to upgrade?

Many people choose to dump a vehicle when reliability starts getting questionable. However, living in NYC, I imagine you have plenty of alternate transportation options if the car breaks down. So you're risk is mitigated compared to someone in a more [more]

Based on annual sales, a lot of people like driving toasters

Based on annual sales, a lot of people eat at McDonald's too. Doesn't mean it's good food.

Re: Need a car

For similar money, I'd strongly suggest taking a look at the Mazda 3. It's received some great reviews, even landed on C&D's 10-Best list. The Corolla is pretty pedestrian among its peers, while the 3 stands out.

A car may be akin to a [more]

Re: Poll: Defining "class"

1st income quintile (up to about $20k now) is the POOR / WORKING POOR.
2nd, 3rd (~$20-62k) maybe even 4th (~$62-102k) are MIDDLE CLASS.

IMO 5th subdivides into UPPER MIDDLE (IMO up to $250k, although top 5% is $186k) and UPPER CLASS,

Assuming you had paperwork showing that it was in fact changed this sounds fine. Most Honda engines are the interference type, so it's critical to do this maintenance as scheduled.

Re: Water bill confusion

I don't think a leaky toilet flapper would even go through 1500 gallons in a 24 hour period.

I'll second that. 1500 gallons in 24 hours is roughly the equivalent of 1 flush per minute in a modern toilet. It would be near impossible [more]
