Re: This week in home repairs

You must be my evil twin. One of my AC units went out last night too. In fact, the same one I repaired a couple months back.

I had a bad wire where it was kinked going into a crimp connector. It got hot, corroded, and ultimately burnt the [more]

Re: Home tool reviews

Personally I favor corded appliances over battery powered drills and such. This is a matter of personal taste, but huge numbers of otherwise useful battery appliances are thrown away when the batteries fail.

I'd much rather have a

Re: X-Post: Riding a Bike to Work

I'm kinda just ribbing you about the park being free. I'm not much of a lifter, running is usually my thing. When I visit NYC, I love running the big loop around Central Park.

It will probably kill you to know that there are gyms in my area [more]

Re: X-Post: Riding a Bike to Work

You threw me with the "$11.6K over about 2 years", since an unlimited Metro card would only cost about $2800 over that same period.

My second though was - YIKES, a gym costs $100/mo in NYC? But the park is free!

Re: Ants!

Terro Ant Killer for sugar ants in the kitchen. Anything else usually a general ant pesticide. In my experience, granules around the perimeter will generally take care of them without you needing to spray indoors.

Wow....I have everything in that list. Even multiples of several of them. And that's just scratching the surface of what I've accumulated over the years. And this list doesn't even go into mechanics tools, plumbing tools, and a whole bunch of other [more]

Re: New Monitor Time

I gave up on puny monitors, lol... My current "monitor" is a 55" Vizio, and I have a couch opposite it in the man cave. Wireless keyboard and mouse. Does everything I need it to do. I'm not much of a twitch/FPS gamer at this point in [more]

Re: Taxes & House Cleaners

I just ignore all that and since our cleaners bring vacuums, buckets with chemicals, towels, mops, etc. class them as contractors.

I have a similar arrangement, and treat it the same way.

Re: Buying a Toilet

I have purchased, installed, and used two of the toilets mentioned already in this thread, so I'll share my thoughts.

The Kohler Cimmaron, as mentioned, has a non-standard flush valve. I have been disappointed in mine. Sure, the flush [more]

Payoff plan...

Okay, I'm posting this here because it helps crystallize the plan in my mind.

Bought a house last year, and bought a few rooms' worth of new furniture for it. Took the 12-month-no-interest financing option, which is finally nearing the end [more]

Re: Dish high speed internet

While throughput can be pretty good, latency is absolutely the issue. Why is that? An orbital satellite is quite far from you - 20k+ miles typically. A packet bouncing from to the satellite back to wherever travels 45k miles or so. Waiting on a [more]

Re: Appraisal came in approx 2 percent under

In the grand scheme of things, $2500 (or <2%) is not a large difference. The home I bought last year did not appraise for the agreed upon price either. The "comps" available weren't very good matches for the square footage of the house, [more]

Re: Buy, or rent a house?

Situations (and RE markets) vary widely. We jumped from an apartment to a purchased condo in 2002. Rent was going up every year - we had gone from $1k to $1200/month over three years for a 2 bedroom. We locked in a 30 year fixed on a $180k condo with [more]

My only comment is to not sweat the details on the budget categories. My personal budgeting style (and everyone is different) is to use broad categories and not worry about minute details. I'm all about the macro budgeting.

Bottom line, how much umbrella insurance should a typical Fool carry?

I believe my umbrella policy is currently $3M. It requires either $100/$300 or $200/$500 limits on my auto insurance, so there's a hidden cost, but the actual [more]

Sassy/SlowLearner,

Re: Gas Mileage

The way to cure tailgaters is to keep going slower and slower and slower until they go around you.

I would also strongly recommend keeping to the right (i.e. the non-passing lane) when you see a faster vehicle coming up behind you. [more]
