Why There Are No Jobs

My small business' healthcare costs went up 50% this year.  The plan is as similar to last year as my insurance agent could make it; deductibles are 50% higher and out-of-pocket maximums have increased across the board.

"Buy American" Increasingly Difficult

I often think of the crisis in US healthcare as I run clients through my small office.

If my clients came to me on a barter basis - chickens for checkups - I'd be sunk.  Most of them do nothing, produce

The Purpose of CAPS

Application of two-valued Aristotelian logic to questions that aren't appropriately answered by it is a common failure that denotes a fairly mediocre mind.

CAPS also does some other things.  It puts ad

Stocks that make progress

Let me give an example, by the way, of the way I look at a company.

I recently trashed FB in a blog post because I think it's a crappy company.  Its valuation places it above some of the best

Stocks that make progress

Dividends are not terrible, but to me they are a sign that the company has run out of places to invest its retained earnings, and I do not regard that as a positive.  I have no particular desire to receive a dividend.  If

I don't compare stocks in the same industry because I don't have to make that choice when I invest my money. I can invest it anywhere.

Buy in Apple now for the smart watch announcement.

I doubt Apple will release a product that is intended to diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any disease.

If they were planning to, their application for FDA review would have been public record.

By the way, I gotta apologize for an error in my last blog entry.  Both the stock screeners I looked at reported wrong market caps for Berkshire Hathaway.  Not sure why, but I think they were reporting capitalization for A

So I was having a Shower Thought™ today and it occurred to me that I don't know what happens to long dated stock options after M+A activity or a bankruptcy.Example:  I buy a long dated call option on XYZ [more]

Fair trade?

Huh, my stock screeners are leading me astray.  Wasn't a joke; Fool's stock screener reported BRK's market cap as $131B, so did Fidelity's.  I wonder if maybe they were reporting the two different share classes

Berkshire is a great company.  Check out its market cap.  It is almost as great as Facebook.  And that's saying something.

Ma Bell Looks Good

I don't necessarily know that trading at the same levels as it was in early 2011 is a great pitch to buy the stock, especially after the buyback.  It actually was 29 and had a dividend over 6% when I bought it - in early 2011 -
