Re: The Five

I believe it's Sky 1.

Here's the IMDb link but be careful if you read any reviews or discussions because IMDb, despite its supposed spoiler polices, lets a lot of them slip through. And you definitely don't want this show [more]

The Five

Just finished this. Not sure if or when this will be available here in the U.S. but if you love mysteries and you get a chance to see it I can't recommend it highly enough. One of the best, most involving, clever mysteries I've ever seen.

Watch the finale tonight w/a couple of friends (we all managed to avoid spoilers the whole week!). How out of touch are we? We thought Sia was some kind of disguised surprise celebrity. We were trying to guess who she might be - "She sounds [more]

Jessica Jones

Hmmm. Watched 2 eps of the first season so far. Ritter's a good actress (and very easy on the eyes), she's believable as JJ and the writers have given her some funny, cynical dialogue. The first two eps had some great twists. Killgrave, the villain, [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

It goes at least as far back to the magazine days and serialized stories. Sherlock Holmes in the Strand for example (1890's). It would not surprise me to find that Greek Theater may have serialized popular performances, or built off them to form a [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

A certain skill was employed by writers, directors and show runners, knowing they had to deal with commercials, to keep the audience in place during those commercial breaks.

Skilled indeed, especially in a well-written show. They have [more]

Funny you should mention commercials, I was thinking about them, as far the "rhythm" thing. I've always hated commercials, not just because 99% of them are bad, but because they interrupt [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

Drama has never been serialized before tv.

Thought about this after I posted. Never say never. Of course there are exceptions. However, for tv, serialization is more the rule. And that is certainly relatively new in dramatic history. [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

Well, the breaks between acts in a play are a few minutes, not a week. The previous action is still fresh, your mind is still attuned to the world of the play.

As for your GOT examples, I'm not getting it. Each episode, whether you watch [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

Thanks, but I've always hated cliffhangers. I much prefer the experience of watching this way. And while I certainly enjoy discussing the shows, it's not that a big a deal for me. My OP was meant somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Rhythm. The rising and falling of tension, building throughout, then climax, denouement. If well-written and well-directed, each scene, each episode, each season has a rhythm. I think of episodes as acts, made up of scenes, as in a play. If anything, [more]

Re: I feel so left out...

I don't have any problem avoiding spoilers. My friends know I'm not watching and I stay out of threads about the shows. It's really not a big deal.

I feel so left out...

All these GOT threads I can't read! As I do every year, I'm waiting for the current season to finish, then I'm going to marathon hell out of it. That's the only way to watch TV these days, imho!

Similar to other highly-regulated products, a little research on YouTube plus purchase of just a few perfectly legal components will allow you to make your own vape pen and oils.

Re: Ads to Programing ratio

I think most network 30-min shows are actually about 21-ish minutes sans commercials, 60-min shows about 42-ish minutes.

I only watch a couple of network series (soon to be down to one since I'm currently marathoning the final season of The Good Wife). This is because, one, most of them are lousy, and two, because even if they are good, or have the potential to [more]
