Re: Soft Skills vs. Hard Employment Reality

I'm a network engineer. The last 4 job offers I had I was not qualified for on the technical side (CCNP or JunOS certs) however I was offered a position based an exactly that. The CIOs said essentially - that they can teach me the programming bits [more]

Re: Any Free AV's to Replace MSE?

I find it odd they are pulling the virus signatures from MSE - SCEP uses the same databases and that's not going away.

Re: Slow internet connection

C-link = Centurylink. The slic is the (usually) green box that the DSL connects to on their side. There are connections to the CO - Central Office which are not as common.

Re: Slow internet connection

Did you pull the power off the modem - aDSL slows to meet line quality issues but does not speed up when the line is better. A reset every so often helps.

Re: How serious is end of XP support?

Win8.1, on the other hand, is so bad that I'm seriously considering buying Win7 for my wife's computer - which actually has a touch screen.

Re: How serious is end of XP support?

XP was a memory hog and Windows 7 is so much more efficient and typically works on older machines.

When you say things like that it make people discount all your other works. XP runs reasonable well on 256MB-512MB. You'll [more]

Re: How serious is end of XP support?

And MSE is still fine and will be updated as the AV updates are identical to System Center Endpoint. SCEP is a bit smarter - seems to catch things MSE doesn't however AV definitions would be pretty OS version agnostic.

Re: new laptop

Did you try support.dell.com for the latest driver update?

I'd suggest wired mouse over anything wireless from my two sense. I hate BT based on I never got it to work the way it was promised.

Whats the CPU in there? I do not agree with Tkeloa that its entirely RAM based. If you have a Celeron or single core CPU in there you can see it pegged at 100%

Re: big drive

To boot Windows for a drive larger than 2TB you need it in GPT format. However to support this you need to have UEFI not regular BIOS.

I would suggest a small drive to boot from (maybe an SSD) and use the 4TB as a secondary.

d) wipe OSX off it and run Windows, then under Windows set up a virtual machine and install OSX.

Apple licensing terms allow OSX native install on Mac hardware. The license does not allow for it running in a VM that I have noticed. [more]

Re: Wireless for Desktop

I run Windows 8.1 on my Imac. I use the wifi to connect to my home wifi.

Its possible to get wifi in a desktop. Some All in One PCs have onboard. I use PCIe wifi cards in my desktops they work better than the USB adapters. Go mid range 50-60 [more]

Sure, with no new oil they can rape up at the gas pump and get higher ROI on existing assets that are paid off. Sounds like a winner for everyone except you and me.

I agree. We tried it here and it chokes on shared workbooks and binary workbooks. We are exclusively binary due to speed concerns.

Re: Credit Card vs PayPal

* PayPal could be less costly.*

I find that hard to believe ans Paypal takes a cut and so does the CC company. The only way it would be cheaper is if a buyer uses a linked checking account.
