"it isn't unreasonable to expect a couple hundred million of that to become dividends or buybacks" XOM returns ~$30B per year in the form of buybacks and dividends. A few hundred million (even a few billion) just doesn't move the throttle. [more]

Before the transaction, he was already down to a "mere" 3.9% of the company.
