New Catalyst "Omega" driver

In one sense this is just another graphics driver release. But it is actually a lot more. AMD took the effort they had been putting into monthly driver releases, and created a separate, slower, path that allowed a lot of new features to be developed [more]

There are indeed 8 channels per stack: http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/sk_hynix_h...

Yes. You can see from the picture that [more]

Basic HBM Info

I don't know if this reflects a new packaging decision, or just a new nomenclature. Probably a bit of both. The original plan was for each die to contain two separate channels, with eight channels per stack. The 2-1/2d [more]

About AMDs Pirate Islands...

Why has AMD delayed the high-end chip in the Pirate Islands series,* and is shipping the mid-range chip first? AFAIK there are four GPUs in the Pirate Islands family. From smallest to largest, Iceland, Treasure Island, Bermuda, [more]

Re: AMD delivers on time

If it's a simple change (like doubling the L2 cache with no other changes) you probably can get it down to 3 quarters. In those kinds of cases you can probably leverage a lot of the learnings from the previous version and won't have as many [more]

Re: AMD delivers on time

In the semi industry everyone knows what to expect when a part is announced as sampling 1QXX, shipping 3QXX, volume availability 4QXX This means that the parts will be available to OEMs, ODMs, mobo makers, memory manufacturers, etc. for [more]

Re: Amazon: ARM server CPUs not a match for Inte

If I read it correctly, not really relevant to AMD's ARM64 servers. (But it could be...)

I think this comment is about webservers, the front end of any hefty data architecture. It is not quite the case that hardware cost is irrelevant, [more]

Re: The Value of Splinter Bids...

The best policy is not to ask for an explanation during the auction unless it could affect your action.

Definitely agree. Speaking as a director, you are expected to refrain from asking about a bid or alert if the only effect is to [more]

Re: The Value of Splinter Bids...

Hmm. If you don't get a trump lead, duck a Spade, or win the Ace and duck a Spade, then cross-ruff. What should you do with a trump lead? Probably start the same way and hope that the winner of the Spade trick doesn't have the remaining trump. In [more]

Cross

We think this just ultimately comes down to AMD's better implementation of multi-GPU technology using its XDMA technology. Since the Radeon R9 290/X has been out its efficient and smooth CrossFire performance has been heralded.

Elsewhere we saw that these new semi-custom SoCs are expected to deliver combined total lifetime revenue of approximately $1 billion over approximately three years. What sells in that volume?

R9 290 and 290X price cuts

On another front AMD has cut prices significantly on their top end GPUs. The new MSRPs are $299 for the 290 and $399 for the 290X.

These price cuts were expected both because of nVidia's new GPUs, and AMD is expected to introduce new top end [more]

Actually, it is an easy problem. But the devil is in the details, especially in the requirements.

Assume you have a pipe from CPU to GPU. As far as your application is [more]
