Re: AMD's Carrizo Thoroughly Tested

My personal rant against the OEMS, they charge a huge markup for optional components.

Too true. For the desktop, , if you are willing to spend an hour or two putting it together, you can buy a collection of components and get a better [more]

Re: AMD's Carrizo Thoroughly Tested

I thought it would have been nice if they had put a second SO-DIMM in the one system that did support dual memory channels, but came with only one populated. It would have shown just how much the decisions to save a few dollars were hurting [more]

Re: More on Seattle

24 A1100 boards = 48 ports. v (48 port 10gb) cost $13079, or $272 per port, including the fabric, cooling, power, etc.

First, I have no idea what you are talking about here. There are a lot of port aggregators with 48 up to 1 Gig [more]

My question is, with the mature 10gb market already out there, what's the compelling features of Seattle A1100?

Re: More on Seattle

I should explain a bit better. Modern server farms, whether corporate datacenters, cloud servers, high performance computing centers or some or all of those, use virtual machines to scale their workloads. As part of that, it is common for the VM host [more]

I don't think Seattle is meant to make major inroads.

Ah, but it is, just not as the main chip in servers. Seattle is a wonderful fit for storage arrays and internet switches. Those may not be the pinnacle of CPUs in server [more]

Oops! I thought they were talking about computing Pi, not looking for large primes. In either case, the software uses the FMA3 instructions to do FFTs using long numbers.

Re: Polaris (GCN 4.0)

The main fact revealed is that AMD will be using TSMC and GF for the GPUs

I suspect that the desktop only GPUs will be made at TSMC, while the GPUs also found in APUs will be fabbed at GF. Of course, when it comes to systems involving [more]

Re: AMD needs more production capacity?

Potentially, right? AMD is at 28nm, with Intel going to 22nm some four years ago. If AMD launches 14nm on time, they are still two years behind Intel. AMD was due to launch 20nm products this year, but cancelled at the last minute.

They were running Dresden at over 100% capacity, putting off needed upgrades because they had a huge customer with huge demands.

Just a technical correction here. AMD did run Dresden at beyond 100%, but it didn't slow upgrades. [more]

I think I can assume that 'tapping' is a bad spell-checking of 'taping'. Given that a tape-out for desktop about now fits with a (late) 4Q16 date for production. (Will Zen start out with DDR4 support? Probably. Will there be HMB2 Zens for high-end [more]

Re: GPU: AMD vs NVDA

Hmm, I'm not sure AMD should go there. On the road map for 2016 is Arctic Islands/4xx with HBM2 and 16/14 FINFets. A Fury X+HBM2 would be competing against Arctic Islands. A 3-6 month shelf life for a high end, low volume product is a luxury AMD [more]
