which are federal, and which are private?
for the federal loans, have you looked into consolidation? - it won't change what you owe, but might have some advantages in [more]

Re: Whole Foods “good,” “bette

Perhaps instead of Organic, we could use the term "aquatic" for most fresh foods and veggies, since water is a large percentage of what you buy. For dried foods, we could call them "xeric". And if its loaded with sodium, how about [more]

Re: Whole Foods “good,” “bette

Exactly - for several hundred years, if something was organic, it was composed principally of carbon, hydrogen, and potentially a few other elements. Lots of "organic" things can kill you, including many which are "all natural" [more]

Re: Capstone Turbine news

The problem with dedicated turbines for trucks are many fold:

1. inability to easily switch between fuels. At least some of the Westport projects can use diesel when natural gas is not available

2. Fewer mechanics familiar with [more]

Re: Suggestions for outdoor tree platform repair

We rehabbed something similar in our yard a few years back. Took off the plywood, added extra joists, the re-decked with 5/4 treated decking boards.

We added a climbing wall that was easy to build, at alight angle (about 14 degrees) so if [more]

Re: How should I spend $5500?

Pay only what you need to on the student loan and IRS debt. As long as you keep paying, you have interest rate security on those.

Pay the 1 high rate card off completely, as well as the car repair.
Pay off credit card debt #4 at a rate [more]

Re: foundation evaluation

I'm in Texas - our water supply in my area is a mix of surface and groundwater. I'm in the Carrizo/Wilcox aquifer, which is actively monitored for draw down. Its replenished by rainfall on a relatively fast cycle - years to decades.

Thanks all

No mines in the area, No old landfill. Pumping in the area is modest and is not causing a cone of depression in our water table. Those things are in my bailiwick.

Background -

We live in a 1960's era, single story, ranch that we acquired about 10 years ago. The house is built on a slab, with no basement or crawlspace. Soils are sandy at the surface but pick up more clay with depth. I'm not aware of [more]

Re: Poll: Flood Insurance

No flood insurance for me - we are on a ridge and like others, we would take a Noah level flood to have a problem. That said, my area has had 25" of rain in the past 90 days or so and we expect 3"-5" in the next 7 days.
