Re: Park Electrochemical (PKE)

Some notes:

In the industry -- VIAS was acquired by TTMI for 1.1X invested capital in 2015 (announced 2014). VIAS was heavily loaded with debt. (I think $17 buy out when deal was announced stock was below $11.)

PKE long-term [more]

Re: Low multiple investing

Sure --

The methodology uses a 6month and 12 month return lagged by 1 month.

The 2 return figures are combined and then divided by the 3 year STDEV.

For example MCD (shown below)

6MO = 29.3%
12MO = [more]

Re: Low multiple investing

Anyone here primarily use low multiple approach to their investments? Low P/E, low P/FCF?

Enterprise Value to Invested Capital (EV/IC) is my main multiple.

How has that worked out over the cycle?

Well the [more]

Re: Many value investors are following bad advice

Denny -- chiming in as I think this was all covered reasonably well in Graham's Security Analysis book. Maybe the bad advice being given was by folks who never chose to crack open Graham's book in the first place. I know I haven't read it as close as [more]

Ironically using gurufocus's mechanical Peter Lynch chart has SHW valued at ~168

Re: HRS?

t h,

Well we know that since the fiscal cliff all the major defense contractors have had strong equity performance. NOC, LMT, RTN, GD, COL, LLL .... even TDY despite it's exposure to the energy sector.

HRS has also done well since [more]

Re: shw and val deal

RR,

No -- I wasn't trying to argue either way as much as I've always struggled with SHW in particular. And when I say struggle -- I've looked at it since 2012 and never invested. But I've watched the value increase.

One could say [more]

Re: shw and val deal

RR et al,

I'm in the camp that SHW is overvalued -- but I've thought that for years and have missed an opportunity to really improve portfolio returns.

I use a hammer and everything looks like a nail approach except for finance [more]

Park Electrochemical (PKE)

Seems like one for further due diligence.

Net cash is significant. Assuming roughly $140 million in net cash that's roughly $7 per share on a $15.25 stock.

Reason for further inspection:

EV/IC with cash is .53X. That's too [more]

Re: GOOG

While QCOM has been on the frustrating side -- I can say using the same guesstimate framework -- GOOGL has been a delight! I would argue GOOGL is in the range of fair value now.

Compounded growth since Q1'05 (Q4'04 first quarter for me of [more]

Re: QCOM - turnaround in progress?

QCOM has taken a bit more of my attention although my portfolio remains mostly quantitative in nature so I don't have great insights into the firm.

I would say that in the low $50s -- expectations remain pretty low. I was [more]

Re: Energy Transfer MLP Meltdown

ET,

I'm not sure how this all plays out. So far it's been devastating to owner's of MLPs despite operating fundamentals that have not deteriorated nearly as much as a typical cyclical company's earnings will during a down cycle. I'm of the [more]

Re: Top large-cap value stocks

naren,

so the difference is about how to calculate the discount/cap rate. that's fine.

as for beta -- I look at it and adjust it by smoothing it towards 1 by only using 2/3s of the reported beta.

also the erp is a variable [more]

Re: Top large-cap value stocks

naren,

good luck with your approach -- seems like a fair amount of number crunching. the work with xbrl looks appealing -- are you doing that in python?

saying that -- while it might not be comparable to a traditional DCF -- by [more]
