Re: Strange system crash or freeze

Well, it wasn't "forever" really. The Console application just has a limit to what it can display in one window, and rather than use the Earlier and Later buttons at the bottom, I decided I'd just go directly to /var/log and look in the [more]

Strange system crash or freeze

Help, please.

I came to my Mac mini (Mavericks, etc.) this evening and found I couldn't log in from the lock screen after many, many tries. I also couldn't log in remotely via screen sharing. Basically, except for the login/unlock prompt [more]

Re: Yosemite and Mavericks

What apps are you worried won't work under Yosemite?

Primarily IDL (http://www.exelisvis.com), plus a few others. Based on user comments and company responses, IDL isn't officially tested [more]

I don't want to create a new partition just for booting Yosemite, but I have some spare external hard drives I can use. Did you have any problems going back?

And did you have any iCloud-related problems while you were running Yosemite on one [more]

Yosemite and Mavericks

Does anyone here with multiple Macs run Yosemite on one and Mavericks on another?

With so much tied into Yosemite and iCloud nowadays, e.g. iCloud Disk, the new Photos for Yosemite, etc., does transitioning to Yosemite on one Mac de facto [more]

Re: What Apple planning for the new Apple TV

I wonder why advertiser-supported local channels don't offer free streaming? After all, it would increase their potential viewership, and thus allow them to charge even more for ads.

Some do, some don't. Maybe most do, by now. From [more]

Re: iSpy: the CIA history of iPhone security hac

Should we be proud that they've spent so much effort trying to crack Apple, or just be happy Apple's really PO'd them now?

Don't get cocky.

Re: Bloatware

What's your opinion of the open Java packages, e.g. OpenJDK 6 or 7, and whether we can ever get away from Oracle? On the Linux side, I seem to recall being heavily shepherded away from Oracle, if Oracle's Java even exists there in recent [more]

It's possible that the automatic update from preferences that hookemfins used does indeed bypass the Ask.com installation, but since this update is the first time the bloatware was foisted on us on the Mac side, AFAIK, I [more]

Any thoughts on how to do this?

Like you, I need to run Java for several of my mission critical applications, and like many people, this bloatware -- however innocuous -- really ticks me off. I'm turning off automatic update checking [more]

After reading this thread, it's clear I was worried about the wrong thing. Heh.

Okay, I see that Phil announced updates to the MBP and MBA including Thunderbolt 2. But still, with USB-C, I wonder about migration of the new port over to the older machines.

USB-C?

So does this mean goodbye Thunderbolt? Part of the point of Thunderbolt was it was supposed to be a sort of all-in-one port, so now that's USB-C. But I was gearing up to invest in Thunderbolt, and now I have to switch gears again. Sure, USB-C doesn't [more]
