Yosemite Public Beta

Has anyone here downloaded the Yosemite Public Beta and given it a test drive? Years ago, as with the original Mac OS X Public Beta, I would have been one of the first in line to give it a try, and nowadays, I might be inclined to do so just to be [more]

Re: Random shutdowns

It's been my observation that random shutdowns are often a result of dead or dying PRAM batteries. A 4 year old iMac would be a likely candidate for a PRAM battery replacement.

(Some say no, the PRAM battery isn't usually the culprit, but [more]

Re: MSFT not learning from its mistakes

You complain about the iOS document model, well they are converging that also... only in the other direction, now iOS is supporting the file system (all-be-it in a limited fashion). Essentially they realized that they were going the wrong way and [more]

And after that proved unsuccessful they swung things the other way with iOS 8 gaining limited file system support.

But they're not. They're integrating features into the different OSes where it makes sense, but the OSes are different entities.

Actually, I've pointed out in the past where Apple has made misguided attempts at pushing the [more]

Re: Hard Drive checking question

My gut tells me a 1,000 is a large number - but as I said above I really don't know if 100 or 1,0000 or 10,000 is a dangerous number. Drives are really cheap - loosing your data is not good.

Eh... I don't have an estimate of what [more]

I use TechTool Protogo to do full scans of my hard drives and other system components every once in a while. It can take a very long time, though.

Verizon, then #1,

Huh, the article I linked said Verizon was #2. I was mistaken. I don't even remember who was #1 then, since I thought it was Verizon... I was certain Cingular/AT&T was behind Verizon at the time, so who was [more]

Re: Cook Backs Cue's 'Best in 25 Years'

Certainly could be. I recall a conversation with the CEO who said 'They never even offered it to us."

Yes, I saw those statements, too, but those came several years afterward, when the iPhone had already been a giant success [more]

He did the exclusive deal with AT&T for the iPhone, and according to the Verizon guy, never even offered it to them.

My recollection is this:

What I do not expect you will see is OSX software running on the PCs.

Technology keeps moving on, whether we like it or not.

Sometimes, "technology" moves backwards, as Apple's occasional blunders of recent years makes evident, whether some like to admit it or not. Not only is it healthy to be [more]

I question his claim in the summary that anyone goes to Apple stores just to go and hang out.

I used to go to my local Apple store and hang out a little, but there are also nice restaurants and such in the immediate neighborhood. I [more]

Cloned to new SSD, Office confused

I'm certain others have had this problem, and I may have run into it myself, but I don't recall the solution:

I just upgraded to a new SSD for my 2008 MBP. (It's the Crucial MX100 512 GB SSD -- very fast; makes my old MBP almost seem like my [more]
