Re: How to buy LEAPS call options for Vanguard 500?

Check out the LEAPs on SPY. SPY options are very liquid, with a relatively small bid/ask spread.

However, call LEAPs are generally a bad investment, IMO. As SPY goes up, IV will go down. So you'll be fighting both IV and time decay, meaning [more]

Re: Closing an Options Spread

I've never traded options on E*Trade, but pretty much all brokers allow you to just click on the position and select sell or buy to close, or just "close position." Usually you don't need to know the strike prices - when you select [more]

Re: Painfull hands

One more suggestion: check out a drop-bar mountain bike or look into getting drop bars on your current mountain bike. The drop bars give you a lot of different hand positions, and you can wrap the bars with thick tape. My hands almost never hurt [more]

Re: Painfull hands

A few things that might help:

- check with your local bike shop and ask them for suggestions

- look into gloves with gel or other cushioning

- look at thicker bar tape or shock-absorbing grips, depending on whether you have [more]

Re: Got My Ride Today

Usually I'm a road guy, but when it gets cold I much prefer riding a mountain bike. I don't go as fast, and I can wear bulkier clothes on the bike.

The big problem for me with winter road biking is my feet - they freeze. I probably need to [more]

Re: Got My Ride Today

yes, it's really amazing how rejuvenating a simple bike ride can be. I've been out almost every day for the past week, enjoying the 70-degree December weather in northern Virginia. There are a lot of bike paths around here, most of them following [more]

Re: first put sold went better than expected

My guess is that much or even most of the time, when you buy or sell an option, a market maker or clearing house is on the other side of the trade. They buy and sell the options to keep the market liquid, but also to hedge stock or other positions [more]

Re: first put sold went better than expected

Early exercise is rare because you don't need to exercise the option in order to "cash in." The owner of a long call can simply "sell to close" to take profits, without the added hassle of taking ownership of the stock. [more]

Re: first put sold went better than expected

Early exercise is pretty rare, except in cases when the underlying stock pays a dividend. Sometimes the put will get exercised early in order to qualify for the dividend payment.

Keep in mind that the odds are very high that most options [more]

Re: learning

Should you choose to sell the put, you just sell to close. You'll generally get a premium that is more or less midway between the bid and ask prices. If the option price is rising, you'll receive closer to the bid price. If you sell when prices are [more]

Re: Poll: Hand caught in the options cookie jar.

On CCs, you'll always give up some potential upside in exchange for capped risk. It's the same for all positions where you have defined risk - that capped/defined risk usually comes with small or capped gains.

The real risk comes with [more]

Buy the best brushes you can find. Purdy brushes seem expensive, but they last a long time if you carefully clean and comb them after each use.

Re: Poll: WFC 45Jan192018

Did you mean to create a poll? If so, I didn't understand the question.

Buying calls is generally a good way to lose money. The underlying stock has to move a lot to make up for time decay. And when the stock goes up, IV generally goes [more]

Re: Selling SALE

It all depends on where you think SALE is headed next. If you think SALE isn't doomed and actually has a good long-term future, you could sell puts. If you think the company is doomed and the stock headed for zero, you could buy LEAP puts. LEAP calls [more]

Re: Yes, you idiot!

I would take the money and run. There's not much time left to November expiration, so the time value in the calls will erode quickly. I've found that with long calls and puts, it's almost always better to book the quick profit than to wait and hope [more]

Re: Getting a handle on pricing

You can predict future option prices, but not exactly. The single biggest determinant of options prices is implied volatility, and there's no way to predict that.
