Total Finder is a plug-in for Finder that extended Finder's capabilities. I wouldn't have bought it, but it came as part of a package of 10-12 apps for $49.99 that I saw recommended here years ago.

Maxing out the RAM would probably help older machines.

The machine that you "inherited from JT" and upgraded from Lion can probably be upgraded to El Capitan.

I recently installed OpenOffice on an old MBP because it would run on Lion.

Many Linux distributions come with the closely related LibreOffice, but it requires Mountain Lion or newer in OSX.
