Re: Mungo's 99D Hi + NHNL

Today, for the first time in as long as I can remember, I skipped a screen pick based on my emotions.
VSR showed up today on a screen and it had rocketed up from $3 to $7 over the last few days on Ebola fears.
All I could imagine was that

Re: Mungo's 99D Hi + NHNL

The Russell 2000 has been behaving better the last few days. The divergence between large and small caps is decreasing.

Re: Poll: Decisions during downturn

I use SH and SDS. The disadvantage is that you need a full cash allocation to buy the ETFs, so you must either have cash on hand or sell some of your stocks to buy the short ETFs. In my case I always keep plenty of cash. Yes, I will close the [more]

Or hedge with short ETFs, for those who don't have access to futures. I'm hedged by about 10% of portfolio value at the moment, since 9/16 or so.

Do you have a preference for which ETF to use? And do you plan to close the short [more]

I'm guessing most of those lows occurred when we dipped early in the day.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. I realize now that highs and lows are based on intraday prices rather than closing prices. Scary that I never thought about [more]

Re: October

I'm a little surprised that despite the pop today, there were many more new lows on the Nasdaq today (288) than yesterday (186) according to Unicorn data, anyway. The NH-NL 9 day WMA is around -150, and the NH/NL ratio is around 0.18. The numbers [more]

Jeez, even most of my stocks lit up. At least they on average just about kept up with the market, which hasn't happened for eons (in investing time).
I suppose we're in for a 2% drop tomorrow...

Re: question about placing orders

I was wondering if it is a good idea to make a small change to the si pro screens, so that you are not chasing the same stocks as everyone else.

Well, that's the rub. You need to make larger changes to really change the picks [more]

Re: question about placing orders

I use FolioFN window trades, and use a liquidity requirement of $750,000 daily dollar volume (based on last 10 days) for all of my screens. That's still pretty low, and some tough-to-trade stocks get through.

Re: Poll: YldEarnYear in Sept

It's one of those frustrating periods. Even when the market goes up, I seem to be stuck in neutral, not picking back up. Grrr.

I'll play along. The WERport was down 8.16% for the dates of 09-02-14 through 09-30-14. SPY was down 1.33% in this time frame.

I'm not even looking at my accounts...after hitting an all-time high in early September sometime, I'm [more]

Wonderful business. But it's best to catch it when it's on sale, if you can manage it.

Just following the screen without any further due diligence in these cases is unwise.

I guess my question is it possible to put into the backtest, that you put in the stop loss at an x percent gain.

If I had a stop loss, I would be golden.

Backtest it. It's easy to pick examples where you'd come out ahead, but unless you count all the ones you'd lose on, it's not a complete analysis.

Re: small stocks in bear now

Ouch, the last two weeks have been lousy, I've been clobbered. Looks like NH-NL is bearish again, but there was a new 99-day high on the SP500 just yesterday. Not much fun.
