Thanks funk...sorry for the delay. I'm wondering if there's a way for me to get an email when a new post or reply is made here?

Re: Recently retired

I didn't know that dividends aren't identified. Can you give me a day or two to check it out? I'm curious about the overall costs. That's pretty good if in your IRA you're paying about .2% or less...I'm guessing you're using Vanguard funds. Maybe if [more]

Re: Recently retired

Hi Vern...I'll have to start with the general plain answer first so here goes: it depends upon the investor. If I have to put a number on it, I'd say about 50% move their money our for access to more funds.

Re: What to do with old 401K?

Ho Optnb...you may want to consider converting at least some of those dollars into a Roth IRA and then 5 years after the transfer, you'll have tax/penalty free access to the money. Why this may be important to you is of course your call, but you'll [more]

Hey reallyalldone thanks for the reminder. Just to piggyback on your post, here's another article about a guy who forgot to update his 457 plan beneficiary form and then his ex (ouch) got 800k (double ouch!) Enjoy! [more]

Re: Traditional 401k vs. Roth 401k

Maybe not technically, but I know a lot of people that 'retire' from their 20+ year job, then pick up a PT job at the local golf course or start a small consulting business. I just meant retirement from one's 'big money' job.

Re: Traditional 401k vs. Roth 401k

While pre-tax savings plans like your 401k are beneficial for deferring tax, it's not always the best strategy from a tax standpoint. For example, what if you have a pension, Social Security, income from a new career, income from your spouse, his/her [more]

Re: Pension Rollover

Hello Vizzle,
It's just my opinion of course, but I prefer having cash in-hand now rather than having it paid out over my life expectancy. Here's the other thing...you know tax rates are relatively reasonable right now, and if you're in a [more]

Deflation?

Hi I'm just curious what you all think...this year we've seen the following:

1) 30-year Treasuries rally
2) Gold flat
3) Silver down
4) Copper down
5) Oil crushed
6) U.S. stocks rally

Is it the U.S. or the [more]

Re: move IRA to ROTH?

Zamu may I suggest that you shell out a few bucks and meet with a competent CPA/tax strategist and CFP®? That would be my first step since you're dealing with a potentially large amount. Do you have any charitable ambitions or the desire to [more]

Re: Lockheed 401k lawsuit

Paul thanks for the great update. So many workers/savers are unaware of the fees they are paying. Just ask! I also see this as a problem in the Public Sector/Government where their 457 plans are saddled with high fees in a lot of cases. Of course, [more]

Re: How much to save?

bc just as a general guideline, at your age consider having about 15-20% in cash, 25% in precious metals (gold & silver), 25-30% in equities, and about 25% in real estate. There are a couple of reasons to get set up like this, one being you don't [more]

Re: Planning for health issues

Paul insurance is one of the funny things that you hope never to have to use but certainly glad to have it when it's needed. I've noticed that a lot people have modest assets - let's say $300K not including their house. I'm not saying it's a layup, [more]

I have to laugh AJ...it's like when the repair guy say's "I'm not trying to upsell you..." then goes on to try and upsell me. If he'd just come out and say "look, I'm trying to upsell you" I might actually listen!

Paul I have to respectfully disagree with you on a few points. If you have assets, it's important to not rely on self-insuring since most people ideally want to preserve the family wealth and pass it on to other family members. The insurance works [more]

Re: Trad. 401(k) v Roth 401(k) both w/match

Hi Turquoise - If you're making $80/year you're in a fairly low tax rate. I'm betting your effective federal tax rate is somewhere around 18%? If that's the case, you may be better off first contributing to your 401(k) with Roth contributions, get [more]
