Re: Private student loans

Generic answer without knowing your friend's situation - avoid if s/he can. Private loans typically have higher interest rates and lack the consumer protections that federal loans do. I took out a small private loan in grad school. It all worked [more]

Re: Credit Card PIN

I don't think you will be *forced* to use a PIN but if you often travel internationally, you may want one. Unmanned kiosks such as train/metro stations, gas stations, etc. require a PIN overseas. I forgot this on a recent trip and didn't dig [more]

The only issue I foresee is possibly being asked for the credit card used for the purchase at check-in. Can DW buy the ticket from here using SIL's CC?

Also, does SIL have the ability to VPN or similar from the UAE to 'trick' the [more]

Re: "Upgrade" to middle seats?

You can request to NOT be on the upgrade list for C+. Many people do this since there's no guarantee you won't get 'upgraded' to a middle seat, as was the case here.

Re: Emotional support animal

Based on my limited understanding, a support animal is not the same as a service animal. Therefore, the typical accommodations required by law are not applicable. Of course, check the statutes for your state and local jurisdictions.

Re: Need advice: Airline tix, round-robin

Google Flights is great at pricing multi-city tickets. Then check Southwest in case they're cheaper (they don't show up in aggregators). Also, consider Akron instead of Cleveland. Depending on your actual destination, it may not be much [more]

Re: Marriott Rewards Visa Card

If you can get the 100,000 points on the Chase Sapphire Reserve card that is probably better but many won't pay the $450 annual fee. $300 of it is easily recovered when you buy something travel related (e.g. an airline [more]

Re: Marriott Rewards Visa Card

DH and I both had this card with no complaints. However, we cancelled when the annual fee came due. The free night cert is only good for cat 1-5, think Courtyard and such. We probably would have kept it if we didn't already use the Chase IHG for [more]

Re: Planning cheap updates

For the powder room, check out the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. They often have nice, new items for cheap. Since it's a relatively small area, you may be able to find the quantities you need and get quality items for not much money.

Re: $14,000

The lifetime gift exemption is ~$5M. That means there is no tax consequence to giving someone up to ~$5M in your lifetime. Yes, there is a form that needs to be submitted if you give someone more than $14k in any given year but that's no reason [more]

Re: Assisting family in downpayment

I'm a bit unclear as to what the issue is. You can give your daughter whatever amount you like up to the lifetime exemption, without triggering any gift tax. If that gift is over $60k for the calendar year, you will need to file a gift form (706, [more]
