Re: Manablock plumbing systems

Very interesting. Pex tubing is used in almost all the new homes, and a vast majority of commercial and educational facilities here in Colorado. I have Copper in my home, but just did a small additional bathroom with Pex. I'm always suspicious about [more]

But realistically, we all have to do that for a million things already. Want to renovate my home? I have to apply for a building permit and submit plans, and have the town building inspector come with his hand out if I want to get it approved. If [more]

Re: How to test for electrical load

Yes, 2011/2012 was much colder (my records show 5-12 degree differences in the feb-april readings). Maybe that is it, but still, since we don't have electric heat, I can't imagine the radiant pumps running that much more.

Re: How to test for electrical load

Our house is heated with wood, in an outdoor boiler which connects to our radiant heat. We do have a couple supplementary heaters in the bathrooms, but they run infrequently. Heat loss shouldn't be much additional power, other than using more wood [more]

Re: How to test for electrical load

Thanks for all the recommendations. I've already gotten on the family to turn stuff off when done, I'll track daily, and see what is going on. Did find out last night the well pump isn't running non-stop, so that isn't the culprit.

Re: How to test for electrical load

Even a low power bill is probably at least 20 KWH a day. In this theoretical case, a 50% bump would be 10KWH, the equivalent of having a 400 watt device running 24/7. That's not an insignificant amount of power. If this was a device in a [more]

Re: How to test for electrical load

But that does bring up the question as to what was involved in all the new work...are there any devices such as dimmers, timers that are electronic and could be faulty? Or is 100% of the new wiring simple outlets and mechanical switches? Have you [more]

Re: How to test for electrical load

11. You have a well that is running 24x7

That would be the one that we had when our electric usage and bill went through the roof, and it took months to find it. We didn't notice because the well wasn't cycling. It was just running

Re: How to test for electrical load

I am pleased to be able to agree with Goofyhoofy in this case.

The idea that you have a "parasitic draw" using up power is mumbo jumbo. It's being used for something. The key to identifying where it's being used is by reading

Re: How to test for electrical load

I would go and double check to make sure that all of the Lights and Outlets still work. I'd expect that you're having a short / arc somewhere. The outlets that were installed, were they all new? Are any of them GFCI that has a warning light if [more]

Re: How to test for electrical load

While there is such a thing as "leakage", it's almost inconceivable that you could use 50% more in a billing period because of it. So I would suspect:

1. You are comparing 'bill', not 'electric usage' and the rate has gone

How to test for electrical load

We had some electrical work done in our basement (added outlets, a few lights) and suddenly our electrical use in the house is up substantially...around 50% over this time last year. Been that way since the electrical work was completed. The new area [more]

I can't speak for that exact problem, since it could be wiring or another fire issue, but I had a friend with one of their circuits frequently tripping....Turned out it was just a worn out breaker. Replaced it with a new one, and no more tripping. [more]
