Re: Autumn kale volunteers

Living through the winter does not make it a perennial.

A perennial plant survives from one year to the next. However, many plants readily reseed for the next year. (Think Black-eyed Susans.) We had some self-seeded sunflowers [more]

Re: OT: The Carefree Retirement Life

If you want to not just get old, but to have a life when old, you need to plan ahead and that includes TRAINING.

Re: Ten Second Warning for Napa Earthquake

Since this earthquake struck at somewhere between 3:30 and 4 am, it's not going to help the average citizen. That said, BART and other 24/7 facilities could make good use of it.

Re: salaryguru: Great Gallery new study

I've seen (and photographed) very similar rock art, in my younger days.

About 35+ years ago a group of us did a backpack in the Waterpocket Fold. We visited the Ranger Station to note various things, like permanent springs and pictographs, [more]

Garden Status

The garden is producing well, thanks to drip irrigation. I've frozen around 6 quarts of tomato sauce from the two roma-type tomato plants. Our two heirloom tomato plants are supplying us w/ eating tomatoes (Mortgage Lifter and Black Krim). I always [more]

I'm much happier with a 180+ day growing season. Fargo has a 121 day growing season.

Re: Differences in Pronunciation in the US

I can go with either crawfish or crayfish/crawdad - depending on if I'm at home (in eastern Missouri) or paddling a river in central/southern Missouri.

It's cray-ahn, since I grew up in southern Illinois.

Re: OT - Human/Neanderthals Interbred

see 'Direct Descendant' by Charles Wilson, 1995.

I picked it up in paperback many years ago. After the first 20 pages, or so, I put it in the "donate" stack. It was just too contrived, alarmist and breathless.

I think Barry Ritholtz answers your question quite logicaaly, based upon data.

Re: Man's Long March From the Workforce

I left the workforce because of too many meetings.

I left the workforce for two reasons:

1) I was bored.

2) The company was going to pay me to leave at the ripe, old age of 61. They also gave me health care coverage [more]

That was my thought, as well.

We got solder "drips" from a faucet we installed in the downstairs bathroom for several months after the install.

USB Devices Are Not Secure

Never trust a USB memory stick to be secure - even if it's brand new!

Malicious code implanted on the stick tricked the machine into thinking a keyboard had been plugged in.

After just a few moments, the "keyboard"
