Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

It's only random if one assumes the quantum vacuum being described is not God. Absent that assumption, how do you distinguish random from purposeful, e.g., was the Big Bang intentional or random?

Sounds like you're looking at both [more]

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

If we deal solely with those aspects that science/mathematics can describe, what additional characteristics must be added to the concept of the quantum vacuum or the multiverse to make those equivalent to the concept of God?

Well, [more]

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

You know, if the rules that we empirically know are capable of producing life, sentience, intelligence are eternal, then the rules (however they are packaged) have the primary characteristics of the creator god.

What additional things

I was just trying to figure out where you were coming from.

For all practical purposes, same as you. But....

There are a few questions, that no matter what the answer may end up being, I will not be surprised.

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

Is it even possible to cross universes (i.e. go from one to another), or would the nature of existence in one be incompatible with another (thereby proving fatal to the traveler)? Again...don't know.

Don't know either. Recall someone [more]

At this point I'm going to refer you to the last 14 years of posts that deal with these questions. I know you'll understand.

None. I understand all too well.

But it does. The fossil record shows us that's what happened. We can observe it directly in the lab (not with biology, but with other things...saw a program (Nat Geo?) about simplicity giving rise to complexity...fractals was one of their [more]

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

I was going along with the general idea that God intervened at times (aka "progressive creation"). But it was according to a plan, to introduce things at just the right time, and only when needed

Why do you find such a scenario plausible, Nigel? Just because you cannot (ever) prove it?

How about possible? Every beginning must cross the same hurdle.

If something has always been here, how does its constitution matter? [more]

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

I'm not following you here.

You said a tinkering god is more appealing, or at least that's what I thought I thought you said. Tinkerers tinker because it isn't right to begin with. They tinker to improve the imperfect creation.

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

I'm not discounting your reaction to a tinkering God, but it could have been the best way to accomplish his goals.

So fallibility makes God more appealing? Seems inconsistent with the religious models I'm aware of.

Re: Ashes to ashes, ...

if something like progressive creation were true, could science ever determine that?

In a reasonable sense, I think so. Let's say life did not arise on Earth, but elsewhere in the universe, and was brought to Earth by a species that [more]

In theory, this is certainly correct. In practice, some things in science become more akin to religious dogma, which can never be challenged under threat of exclusion and excommunication, and can only be changed by a changing of the guard. [more]
