The 27in iMac seems the better value seeing that an equivalent display (27in, IPS, 2560-by-1440) costs $700.
A 21in IPS 1920-by-1024 display only cost $210.

Most software pros I know use a 15" MacBook Pro (w/o a retina display), which will set you back $1800.

I'm too cheap to buy a MacBook Pro.

The mini has the same CPU/chipset as a MacBook Pro.
It's lacking the Nvidia 650M discrete graphics chip.

As far as timing the market goes; May-July is the end of the Ivy-bridge model year.
That's the time to get a good deal on "last year's model."
Haswell doesn't add much except for extremely low power usage in idle [more]

I can't recall seeing On-Balance-Volume so heavily skewed towards liftings the offer vs hitting the bid.
