Re: An Open Letter

Some people are very firm in their belief that someone's wedding is when they get married, whether that is in a courthouse signing papers or actually having a big showy traditional wedding.

To me it doesn't seem like a big deal to just be [more]

Re: Shopping for a new kitchen sink

My mom has a cast iron sink, although hers is white, not black. She's never chipped it, but it does always look grubby and a bit stained. But I don't think she cleans it a lot.

I've seen black granite sinks and our re-modeler recommended [more]

Re: Ramen Hacks

I used to eat ramen somewhat regularly back when I was earning very little. To help with reducing the salt, I'd only use 1/2 the flavoring packet. It still seemed to be flavorful and still tasted quite salty.

Re: Crazy Market

Last June my house hit the MLS on a Friday and I had offers that Saturday, one of them full price.

We are in process of looking for a house currently. Everything we see on the listings that we like and think is priced decently is selling [more]

Re: Front loaders vs. top loaders

Ours is a front loader from Frigidaire. Probably about 3 years old.

I'm not a big fan of it. I had a top loader before but the front loader was my husband's. In my top loader I used to wash most things in cold and get pretty good results - [more]

Re: New Car Fever Again

I recently bought a Honda CRV and it is really nice. My husband has friends who are auto mechanics and recommended it highly as being a very stable safe SUV and very good in terms of longevity and need for maintenance and repairs.

You can [more]

Re: Pocket Doors

I had some pocket doors in my previous house. They were probably about 15 years old at the time and worked fine. One did get off the track once. It was a bit tricky to get it back on right, but eventually we got it.

We've been going to a lot [more]

Re: Budget Help

Couple thoughts - Yes, people get tired and don't want to cook. However, if you do some planning and don't do complex stuff, you could easily get used to cooking so it didn't feel like a huge chore. Part of it is really just laziness and [more]

Doors replacement - what is easier for novices

Currently we have hollow core doors in the interior of our home. We are thinking of upgrading to solid wood doors. We're hoping to DIY this if we can.

We are thinking about the labor and complexity factor in whether to buy just the doors [more]

Re: Wow Have Things Changed - Seeking Advice

Here's some thoughts. You have a great income and if you really really don't want to lose this house, and if you can come up with a down payment, you could afford to carry the other house(s) for while if your 30 day sale runs into snags (that's a [more]

Re: Downsizing advice? (Long)

I recently downsized a lot when I got married.

The easiest for me was to make several passes at purging areas, each time starting with the low-hanging fruit. I had a lot of books, for example. First pass I went through and pulled out [more]

Change withholding/Estimated taxes

This is our first year of married filing jointly and I'm trying to figure out how best to change our withholding.

For 2013, we are getting about a $5000 refund. Hubby had to pay $8100 in quarterly estimated taxes for 2013 based on his [more]

Property tax deduction on sold home

I married in 2013, so this is my first year of joint filing. I sold my primary residence halfway through 2013, and moved to my husband's home. (That home met all the qualifications for property tax deduction.)

Because of the sold home, I [more]

Re: Living Below Your Means Under Obamacare

It's insurance. There's always a chance you'll never use it.

Most of us carry insurance we'll never use. It's the nature of the pool - everyone pays in and only a few people use it.

In some categories of insurance, its [more]

Re: Talking money = always rude??

I agree if the vacation house rents by the week, as many such homes are, then if one group chooses to stay only 5 days, they should still pay for the week. If it was rented by the day and one family chose to stay longer then I'd say person days are [more]

Cousin is being unreasonable. The whole "pay what you want" thing seems destined to cause problems.

I do think an open accounting up front (prior to booking) is very important in these kind of things. If assumptions are made, [more]

Re: Student Loans, Consumer Debt, & Savings, OH MY!

I'd probably do them in interest rate order, highest to smallest. Saves the most money. So I guess I'd do the student loan at 4.5 then the 3.5 then the 2.7. The car would probably be paid off before you'd get to it via interest rate.
