I think rmhj pretty well nailed it. The algorithms are strong, but the implementations are weak.

I routinely receive documents encrypted with strong algorithms and trivial keys. NSA or FBI would have the plain text in seconds. [more]

(with smartphones, it was still cheaper to call 3rd parties through skype if wifi was available, but the people we most wanted to be in touch with were not tech savvy so we needed our phones doing regular phone type functions [more]
