Inflation - 3%/yr
MKL BV CAGR - 13%
BRK BV CAGR - 10%

I'll also predict that both MKL and BRK will trade at 1.6 times BV sometime in the years 9 to 11.

Re: Buybacks - The Economist gets it wrong

I don't see how buybacks are detrimental to the selling shareholder under any circumstances, including when done well under intrinsic value. The shareholder's decision to sell is independent of management's action. The shareholder is going to sell [more]

Re: Interview, MV Revenue Run Rate

Having some trouble figuring out Markel Ventures. As you note, Mr. Gayner is talking about $1 billion run rate revenues and double-digit EBITDA. With a $9 billion market cap for the whole company, it seems like Ventures is starting to reach a point [more]

Re: Miss?

It used to be that real interest rates were materially positive.

If a firm is using investment leverage, isn't the magnitude of the interest rate also important, if not more important? For example, if a company has significantly more [more]

OT: GLRE AND TRPE

Anyone own either of these insurers with famous investors (GLRE -Einhorn; TRPE -Dan Loeb)?

I think GLRE might be interesting. Some positives are that it is trading around book; The investments are managed by Einhorn, who has a great record; [more]

Accumulators

There has been some talk of selling lately on the board. I am wondering what the accumulators are doing? The size and strength of the business coupled with the unusual 1.2 buy back make BRK pretty unique and I am wondering if there are any [more]

Re: Brk book as of 2nd Qtr is 94.99/B Share

I think your $125 buy back price at the end of the year is a little off. If my math is right, that would require book growth of about 9.6% in The last half of this year. I figure something closer to $121 at the end of '14. I wouldn't expect $104 [more]

Re: I wish!

Thanks for the responses. I just found the 5% number interesting. As most are probably aware, conventional thinking is 4% is a safe withdrawal rate in retirement. Given current stock and bond valuations I have seen some suggestions that 3% is more [more]

Re: I wish!

Regardless of the Fed. you can generate an income of $30K from $600K by selectively buying dividend paying stocks that yield, on aggregate, 5%.

5% doesn't seem like an easy putt at this point. A portfolio of GE, KO, PG, JNJ, WFC [more]

Re: IV10/Price Update

FWIW, and maybe it isn't worth much, but I think 6.5% annual book value growth per share for MKL is too low. Not sure how they came up with that. Also, I don't see why MKL would trade at 1.61 book if they only grew book value at 6.5% annually. Seems [more]

I meant to post the below here, but mistakenly put it over in BMW. Anyway, the question is the same. Since that post, I see that the two firms appear to be Roth Capital and Sidoti. Not sure who these firms are or which one provided which [more]
