Re: IV10/Price Update

FWIW, and maybe it isn't worth much, but I think 6.5% annual book value growth per share for MKL is too low. Not sure how they came up with that. Also, I don't see why MKL would trade at 1.61 book if they only grew book value at 6.5% annually. Seems [more]

Re: What is BH worth?

You don't like Berkshire because you don't think it will provide a relatively safe and steady good returns (say 8%+) or because you think a small investor can do better than that elsewhere.

I meant to post the below here, but mistakenly put it over in BMW. Anyway, the question is the same. Since that post, I see that the two firms appear to be Roth Capital and Sidoti. Not sure who these firms are or which one provided which [more]

BBSI

A blog on the fool page States that the 2015 earnings estimate for BBSI is$3.76. Yahoo finance is showing that as the average of 2 estimates, but other sources only provide one analyst estimate - $3.16. Obviously, that's a big difference and the [more]

Peter Lynch Would Love Barrett Business Services (BBSI); You Should Too

Any insight into the analyst estimates?  Yahoo finance has two - $3.36 and $4.16 for the $3.76 average you mention in your post.  However, the fool only lists one estimate for 2015 - $3.36.  MSN Money and the Street

Re: Heresy revisited

I've foregone $59,424 in gains on those 2 Berkshire shares and made $241,700 on the calls

Not bad for 14 months. Must be some nice walking around money even in Monaco.

Re: Heresy revisited

BRK still looks reasonably priced although I have largely sold out as I'm not playing to compound at 10-12%

I thought I was loaded up on BRK, but I would be happy to buy some more if it gets closer to 1.3 book.

Re: Mostly OT: Scared of living too long?

What do you think the true inflation rate is now? Not the one the government reports, but the one that matches the growth of costs of what you actually need to buy?

I was comparing dividend stocks to the annuity. For that, it [more]

They cite the example of husband 62 and wife 60 purchasing an inflation projected annuity for $500000.
Income quote was $15814 (3.16%) a year.

Wow! What a truly awful deal.

I actually think it wouldn't be that hard to [more]

Re: long term p/b average for MKL

What source?

I've got 1.3 for the P/BV today. That's the higher end of the more recent valuation period (2009-present). However, it is still historically low. Not as good as it has been recently, but historically still pretty good. Looks to [more]

Re: good quarter

I don't care about the rounding issue, for all intents and purposes, 3.5% and 4% are the same thing, as far as I'm concerned.

I've considered it, and I still don't care for the reporting as 4%. As you point out, the rounding doesn't [more]

Re: good quarter

Agree. Continue to really like this company.

The only thing I didn't like is that they claim a 4% increase in book value per share for the first quarter in their press release and I am calculating it at just over 3.5% (actually, 3.52%). That [more]

Re: Dare to be great

FWIW, my BX K-1 was a reasonable amount more a pain in the neck than the typical K-1 I receive. I believe it has to do with the variety of activities that they engage in, versus say an oil and gas MLP. Not sure if OAK would be the same or not.

Re: OT: MOAT and GVAL

Maybe I should add a link (it is to a BRK company). Here is a press release touting MOAT's lack of a capital gains distribution. If I understand correctly, I would definitely avoid capital gains distributions if I bought the ETN WMW, but then get the [more]

Thanks for the link.

Per that paper, ETFs cannot necessarily avoid capital gains by making in-kind trades (page 4; right-hand column). Also, it notes that there can be capital gains if there is frequent portfolio turnover and that passive [more]

Re: Timing

Maybe my post wasn't clear. It was meant to be in support of considering timing.

My point was, say you look back at 2008-2009 and see a MDD for B&H of 50% and timing of 30%. I don't think that tells the whole story. When the S&P hits [more]

Re: Timing

I think people are quick to forget a few things about 2008-2009. First, it wasn't just equities that were a problems. At the same time people equities were down, a lot of employers were shedding jobs and it was very difficult to sell a house. Those [more]
