Re: APO & Athene

Some random APO news from Yahoo finance.

Martin Sass was on CNBC touting Apollo. He thinks it is worth at least 50% more. I don't follow Mr. Sass at all and no opinion on his investing.

Position Sizing

ET,

I saw your post on the BRK board. I saw that you had some small position sizes - e.g., 35 basis points in BRK. I have been trying to get away from particularly small positions that aren't going to make a difference in my overall results. [more]

We've got a lot of visitors and weddings in the next few weeks, but I'll put it on my list.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that RELY is a buy at these prices

What?? I wasn't supposed to mortgage my house on this?

I actually looked at the price this morning. Up about 20% since your original post. I haven't had a [more]

Thanks for posting.

Looks like they are currently an aluminum recycler with plans to acquire some other companies and some tax losses to help out.

Have not yet made an attempt at valuation, but notice the stock price is up a lot in [more]

Hi Adam,

Any chance you could link back to some articles or threads about MCEP that you think are interesting?

Annual Shareholders Meeting

If anybody has seen notes from the annual shareholders meeting, it would be great if you would post a link. I haven't seen anything yet, but will link if I do.

Re: Alt Managers and Tax Rules

Interesting comments about the difficulty of specifically targeting these. That adds to my thought that there isn't a lot of danger of action right now.

I agree that some of the talk that K-1 companies can't be held in tax deferred accounts [more]

Alt Managers and Tax Rules

I saw the Bloomberg article linked below today. I don't think this is a new threat from the president, and certainly has been proposed in the past by others. I also don't expect any action on it in the short term.

I don't know that I [more]

Mgmt fee income is worth "more"

I like the quotes on "more". It seems to me as though the discounting of the volatile earnings is unjustified. I understand this isn't a dividend aristocrat type company and some [more]

Put me in the fine with Ackman camp. Fees are high, but no different than other similar vehicles. Also, fees are coming down - see the annual report.

Re: OT: L

I agree with TotalReturnInv and pretty much everything he says. My patience ran out. The problem, as I see it, is that L simply isn't creating the value of other companies. I think BRK is a good example. While L has been holding cash BRK has made the [more]

Re: APO & Athene

I took a look at Apollo's quarter. A few quick things I noticed:

(1) They returned to growth in AUM. I think they reported 2% for the year, it is also about 2% for the quarter.

(2) During the call, they mentioned that the [more]

It is a PFIC. I am not familiar with all of the corresponding tax rules, but it may be difficult to deal with in a taxable account.

So over at TGA we have a ton of great oil stocks we've found including: MCEP, SDRL, NADL, PACD, ATW, HAL, CLB, NOV, OII, MPLX, KMI, EPD, MMP, NTI

Do you have a post number that would point me to the thread on MCEP?

Re: WP Carey

I think that a 4% yielding portfolio is doable, but there are a couple of challenges. You need a 6%er to balance out a 2%er and a 5% yielder to balance out a 3% yielder. That makes it tough to include a lot of good companies with good dividend [more]

Re: GLRE - Greenlight

GLRE reported today. Nothing particularly surprising.
