Re: Brad Thomas - 4 REITS

All I can say is that it's been OK for me.

With distributions reinvested, that looks like a 3.4x return on your original investment in 9 years. A pretty great CAGR, especially compared to the S&P over that time. I think you can [more]

Re: OT: Newseum financial troubles = opportunit

Never heard of the place before. Of all the wonderful attractions to visit in DC, this wouldn't make my top 20.

There are certainly places I would put ahead of the Newseum, but I'll stand by my support of the museum. I prefer it to [more]

Re: OT: Newseum financial troubles = opportunity ?

I really like the Newseum. Didn't even mind paying for it in a city of free museums. I may be the only one, but I much prefer it to the other major pay museum in DC (the Spy Museum).

GLRE

Not a good first half of the year for GLRE. Greenlight Capital is down 3% for the first half of the year. Negative 3%, plus some investment leverage, plus gain or loss on writing the insurance = probably about (4)% for the first half for GLRE. Micron [more]

Re: OK, time to start getting back into BRK

Anybody who knows them both who doesn't think BRK is a lot better buy than MKL right here, right now, feel free to expound on it.

FWIW, I was buying MKL earlier this year and bought some BRK for the first time in a while this week. A [more]

Re: Dividend

Additionally, Berkshire Hathaway maintains an aggressive stock buyback policy that puts cash directly into shareholders' pockets.

Surprised they made such a big and obvious mistake.

I think it would make sense for them to buy [more]

Asset Managers and Diversification

I don't have much material for a post, but thought I would bump the board up the list a little.

I sometimes think about the amount of diversification provided by owning multiple asset managers. That is, how much diversification is added by [more]

MKL Share Price

MKL's share price continues its climb higher this year. Up 18.77% YTD versus a couple of percent for the S&P 500. Yesterday was an unusually big up day compared to the market.

I am not inclined to sell for a good while unless the price [more]

On Pennies and Steamrollers

An author on Seeking Alpha suggested selling $115 January 2017 puts for the B-shares at about $3 under the rationale that $115 is roughly the current 1.2 buyback price. I think these sort of high probability trades are sometimes interesting to read [more]

Re: VTR

What bothers me most is not just the price moves which are totally unrelated to any company specific events. The indiscriminant sales can cause others who should care about the business fundamentals to either sell too or to not buy in the first [more]

RELY

There is a very brief thread on Corner of Berkshire about this company. The main content is a Youtube video, which I have not watched. Might or might not be of interest.

"To be fair, there is a lot of money that can potentially be saved if a CALPERS or other organization brings PE in house."

I also think the salaries of an in-house unit are a problem. For example, Harvard paid their head of [more]

Alt Managers - Beyond the Headlines

Some strongly worded headlines in the news recently with regards to external manages in response to some state pension news. Seeking Alpha titled their blurb "Shudders on Wall Street" and tagged BX.

Looking at the actual moves [more]
