Re: Harvey Auto Losses

I think my $500 million estimate may actually be pretty good. An Insurance Industry analyst just quoted an estimate of $494 million at GEICO.

Re: Harvey Auto Losses

Listening to Buffett's comments regarding GEICO exposure and potential losses regarding Harvey...and guesstimating a generous cost-per-vehicle...I'd ballpark about a $500 million loss for Berkshire's GEICO subsidiary.

Re: What is GEICO up to?

Jim, I agree. I don't understand how GEICO prices, but I do appreciate they have the smartest people around and the long term track record to prove it.

Oh, and BTW on that questionable policy on my son: they've taken in $1,750 and [more]

What is GEICO up to?

GEICO has become ultra aggressive in pricing for market share grabs. I wonder why and what's going on here.

Buffett has said some competitors are reluctant to take on even marginally risky policies because loss ratios are rising for [more]

I don't know if "marching" is the verb I'd use. Seems more like sitting or resting :)

With cash pouring in each month, Berkshire added a net minus $1 Billion in stock purchases for the quarter.

Cash seems on a [more]

Re: Buffett and BAC

Sure, but even allowing for the preference of the Preferred..it would represent only 5/17ths of Berkshire's total BAC exposure if he kept it. And even then it would be an issue for less than four years.

In 4 years... Berkshire would own [more]

Re: Buffett and BAC

I don't think so. Banks got the go-ahead this week to be able to distribute more capital. Something they've wanted to do for some time. Regulators gave the go-ahead, and BACs move was in-line with other large banks. All of the banks moved [more]

Re: Buffett and BAC

FYI, I think WFC will do just fine long term. My only point is..from the low base of BAC ROE numbers of recent years--here's what happens annually to BAC's income according to BACs own 10-k a year ago based on hypothetical rate changes: [more]

I think he didn't know. And it doesn't matter. I take him at his word: as soon as the Common exceeded $300 million income for his investment he would switch. That happened this week. It's really that simple.

Assuming BAC trades [more]

Re: Buffett and BAC

With the largest deposit base in the United States, BAC has been hurt badly from an earnings perspective with historically low interest rates for 8 straight years and a rather flat yield curve. This is going to makes ROE comparisons look very weak [more]

Re: Buffett sold IBM shares

If IBM's performance from 2011 through 2017 was known to Buffett, he obviously would not have purchased the stock.

Dividend Likely Sooner Than Later

Buffett was asked about raising the buy price on future buybacks and returning capital.

Thought it was interesting that Buffett himself raised the dividend issue in answering even though it was not part of the question.
