Re: You need $100K a year, at least?

If you are living in the high rent district, you probably aren't in a ghetto, and the public schools are probably just fine.
Not true here. While Oakland isn't as expensive as SF yet (only $3K for a one-bedroom flat, not $4K), it's got [more]

Re: Credit Card for use in Europe

When I was in Italy some ATMs didn't take CCs unless they were chip and pin enabled. And in Malaysia I had a few vendors not be able to deal with the card. But mostly it's been OK without chip & pin.

Re: NYTimes for less

I used to do this on a regular basis: sign up for 6 months at 50%, cancel at 6 months. Wait 3 months until they offered it again, and sign up again. Rinse and Repeat. I get Sunday only, and can't do just digital as the main thing I get it for is the [more]

Re: Dressing up

It's not joust non-skinny women who have a hard time finding clothes to fit off the rack. It's ANY women with curves. They design for skinny, flat, board-like women with broad shoulders. I'm pretty thin, but I have a big butt and a tiny waist and [more]

I worked for BR for 14 years and never found a dress that fit me. They don't make clothes for hippy (not hippie!) girls...

Re: 13 Mistakes of 20-Somethings

Dunno - I was single all through my 20's, 30's, 40's because I wanted to find my "soul mate" or not bother committing to any one person. And at 48, I did. I have no regrets about not getting married earlier. Being single is a perfectly fine [more]

Re: Dressing up

Have you looked at J. Jill? they're not the most super-exciting, but they have good basic pieces. I bought a loose, black sleeveless dress there a few years ago that's been a good basic piece for me. I layer it a lot, or sometimes wear it with bright [more]

Re: ethics in LBYM

Because we know some major businesses pay zero taxes, do we stop using them or their products? Well in WalMart's case, absolutely...

They were trying to dodge filing taxes, and therefore you did the wrong thing in aiding that.

But yes, they should have given you a clear proposal up front. Last time I had tree work done I got a written proposal and the cost was exactly [more]

Re: tonight's cheap dinner

I like the fat in chicken. I mostly buy dark meat because it is fattier/tastier. Can't handle those bland, dry white meat chicken breasts.

There have been all kinds of recent studies that show that fat is in fact needed and good for you, and [more]

Meatball subs? Drown them in tomato and cheese!

I love Greek meatballs a lot, even though I don't eat much meat. I made them for my 45th B-day a few years ago. Here is a good recipe (I did a mix of lamb & beef and pan-friend them, not [more]

Usually not. Most countries require it to be good for 6 months to let you enter the country. I would just replace it now.

Re: LBYM garbage disposal deodorizor

Once a week or so I do the following: first stop sink and fill with hot water, some bleach and a small bit of soap. Drain while running disposal. Then grind up half a lemon.

Under no circumstances touch your IRAs and 401Ks. They are not (usually) able to be touched in bankruptcy. And it sounds like there is no point in trying to pay this down married to a compulsive spender who doesn't understand that you have a [more]

Re: olive oil help wanted

I get local olive oil at a fancy store (a relatively new habit as of this year), because it's fresh press and there's been lots of news about diluted/falsified olive oil. I used to use vast amounts of Colavita for both cooking and salads. Now I tend [more]
