Re: OT MIT: H3N2 pandemic lurks

Just finished reading John Barry's "The Great Influenza" about the pandemic of 1918-1919. He provides an excellent explanation of how the virus infects and replicates. Nature's revenge.

Re: A big problem that's under the radar

Interesting coincidence, I took a week class at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC last month on pollinators and their importance to our food supply. I'm planting bee friendly plants now. One issue pointed out in class was the practice [more]

And, investing based on Macro Economics is like trying to predict the weather based on climate studies..

Re: 25% are "credit pariahs"

Re: Structuring assets -- drawdown phase

Wendy, I interpret that to mean you are younger than 65 now? I have an impression that women are much more concerned about outliving their assets and are overly cautious in investing and spending them. I like you don't plan to leave anything behind [more]

OT-Roth question

I know this isn't a METAR subject but I respect the opinions of the regulars on this board and couldn't find another TMF board to ask the question of.

I have a Roth with a stock that shows a (for me) considerable loss. It was a takeover. I [more]

Check the IRS rules. I believe you need to close out the entire Roth IRA and not have any others to take a loss.

Re: Budget exercise: Broke on $50K/yr.

A car payment? DSL is a necessary expense? $50 a month for clothing? I think the article makes its point but it also reveals how far away we've moved from what we *need* to what we *want*.

Re: Fiscal trouble ahead for most future retirees

Increasingly, as I read these types of articles, I am coming to a couple of conclusions:

1. The answer is not in getting enough money for retirement and old age. The answer is finding a different way to live. In the past, families to care of [more]
