You also unlock new characters depending on how long you survived, which adds some variety to the replays. They are not necessarily stronger, but generally have an ability of some kind that is unique to them, so they play a bit [more]

Re: Don't Starve

I did go underground once, which is actually what ended my longest game to date (100-odd days). I had figured it would be a small quickly-explored area rather than a whole new map on the scale of the above-ground world, and didn't adjust quickly [more]

Bah, 4 replies already and not one saying anything about the game. You guys are making me look bad!

I bought it a couple of years back and was quite addicted for a while. It's a sandbox survival game with perma-death and no tutorial or [more]

You might get a better response on the Computer and Video Gamers board. It's more active than this one (which is about the industry sector rather than the games themselves).

Re: The Steam Holiday Auction

I have largely ignored my inventory until now, figuring that it just contained a bunch of worthless wannabe-collectible crap that Steam was hoping to use to extract more money from me.

Turns out I was wrong, and it's actually a bunch of [more]

Re: My Undying Love for Crusader Kings 2

Very interesting reports as always.

I shelved my game for a while after some other gaming priorities came up, and also after the Aztecs came in and wiped out Ireland leaving me with just Denmark (oddly enough it's still called Ireland even [more]

I see you online and playing occasionally when I log on (if you are still in Eastern time zone, you must be quite the night owl). When I have some spare time I might jump in and spectate one of your games and freak you out. :) You're welcome to [more]

Re: Goblins vs. Gnomes.

I've played a couple of Arenas with the new cards (6 win rogue and 2 win shaman) and I've been enjoying them. It certainly mixes things up a lot and makes games less predictable. I'm looking forward to the game being available in a couple of days. I [more]

Re: Steam Exploration Sale

Do I lose my gaming nerd card if I ask what "RNG" is?

Random Number Generator, or (colloquially in gaming) any game mechanic that relies on randomness to some degree.

...sorry, that wasn't what you asked, was it? I [more]

But my God, is it refreshing to see a DISCUSSION without anyone falling back into partisan rhetoric...

I am coming to believe that partisan rhetoric is the bread and circuses of the modern era. Dog-whistle issues are used to rally the [more]

Re: Immigration

No, I want a level playing field.

And so do the immigrants, and would-be-but-not-really immigrants (the H-1Bs and illegals). The only ones that don't are the employers, because it is currently imbalanced in their favor. This site [more]

Re: Immigration

Having an illegal group of people to exploit is an American tradition - we even wrote it into the Constitution (slavery). We need to recognize this truth about ourselves and decide what we want to do about it.

It's not just illegal [more]

Just read the link. I guess I should have done that first. From the design philosophies it sounds like they intend to address the concerns I raised so let's hope they succeed.

Re: Major multiplayer changes coming

I'd have to have a look at the unit changes to check how that will work. My impression when I still played was that when players failed to take the extra bases, it wasn't because they didn't see a use for them(except in the case of 1 and 2 base [more]

Re: 'Snow Crash': Neal Stephenson

How much credence would you give to the veracity of his occasionally exotic explorations? In this one he really goes OCD on Sumerian and other mythologies, to the point where I'm wondering how much of a 'snow' job I'm into :) Plus, I thought the [more]

Sounds like you are getting the hang of it. I can't believe that you got a matrilineal marriage to the King of England. I don't know if I would have even attempted that one since it is such a long shot.

I was quite proud of that one. [more]

Re: My Undying Love for Crusader Kings 2

Well, I'm about halfway through my first game (220 years in - it looks like I get about the same again before the game period ends) which is going reasonably well. I haven't watched too many of the tutorial videos yet but I think I'm getting the hang [more]

Already did. :) Seemed to work fine.

Gnomes and Goblins sounds interesting. I see there is already grumbling about the increased use of RNG, as you'd expect from an engineering-themed expansion, but I like it. (L2 do expected value/variance [more]

Interesting. Sort of Pixar meets X-Men meets League of Legends.

I'm not familiar with Team Fortress 2, but coming out with a new take on a proven formula is pretty much Blizzard MO. I also can't say I've played team-based shooters before, [more]
