Generally, there will be a full patch and an update patch. If you have a fresh install v1.0, then you only(most cases) need the latest full version. If you have a patched version, for example v1.02, there maybe an update patch that takes v1.02 -> [more]

According to Roberts Space Industries, Star Citizen has crowd funded over $9.1 million. About $2 million through kickstarter and the rest it appears is people coming to the web site and ponying up some dough. That is phenomenal.
