Re: The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation

The fact that a carbon tax is used as the vehicle for achieving that regulatory fiat doesn't mean that you're internalizing the externality within the meaning of a Coasian market transaction.

"Shouldn't we bring that risk, appropriately discounted for time, into the marketplace?"

Sure, but this is the crux of the entire debate. Some say drastic measures are needed right away, else doom, others...the problem is how to

generally, you have a legal right to emit carbon (and it's near absolute at the national level), and people have to pay you not to emit if they want you to reduce emissions. It is not guaranteed that "internalizing the externality" by [more]

Switching natural gas for oil in the transportation sector does not actually help with global warming, at least not with current leakage rates of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, according to the following recent study published in the [more]

Re: The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation

The smog must be dealt with. You can cut smog using scrubbers for your coal burners and other measures, as the US has done.

But, if you do that, to the tune of trillions of dollars globally, you risk stranding those assets before their [more]

As I've argued before, in the shorter term the co-benefit of reducing smog-forming pollution outweighs the costs of climate mitigation, so you get the climate change benefit for free in the 2050 time frame.

We've seen a study earlier this year which found the co-benefit of reduced small particle pollution and ozone offsets pretty much all the cost of climate mitigation through 2100.

Albaby incorrectly said that the IPCC estimates the cost of climate change under business as usual at 1.1% of global consumption in 2100.

The ENSO simulation is greatly improved in the current generation of models compared to the last. We're making progress, and of course it's a prime area of research.
