Re: Projected Costs of Generating Electricity

Given the extremely low cost of funds for federal government borrowing right now, and the low employment participation rate, I'd support a big buildout of nuclear funded by the government at this time.

Re: Solar disrupting electric utility in NV

I was ready to buy the GE Geospring model (50 gallon) when it was on sale at $999 at Lowes, but in the end I chose the Airgenerate over the GE after reading a bunch of reports about the GE models being unreliable. And I was able to get a lower [more]

Re: Solar disrupting electric utility in NV

I have a heat pump. It sucks hot air out of my garage and "pushes" it into the water while releasing cooler air (I think I will eventually pipe that cooler air into the house rather than "waste" it in the garage).

Arctic sea ice has continued to drop and is now more than 2 standard deviations below normal. The DMI measure appears to have caught up with the NSIDC.

Re: Long term nuclear power economics

Fact: Nuclear power is one of the lowest CO2 emitting energy technologies available to us today, and also one of the only such techs that can provide power 24/7.

It's true that nuclear struggles to compete economically in the current [more]

Re: Tesla Shatters Consumer Rpts Rating System

Model X is an SUV version of the Model S, so expect it to be priced similarly, probably slightly higher if I had to guess, for a given trim.

The Model 3 will be their first attempt to make a smaller, more affordable car.

Re: Tesla Shatters Consumer Rpts Rating System

I distinctly remember some talk years ago that Tesla was aiming for a 60k price. Then it turned out the base was at least 80, with most customers paying 100k. So now that we're talking about a $127k model it's quite obvious that the cost is NOT [more]

Tesla breaks the Consumer Reports rating system

Tesla's Model S P85D reportedly scored so high on Consumer Reports' tests that it earned a perfect 100 out of 100, but only after they re-scaled the results because it actually hit 103 out of 100.

Re: Control Panel: Trend Change?

One issue I worry about is that infrastructure investment almost always is politically determined. For example, around here the stimulus package enabled the local authorities to repave perfectly good roads. I don't see how repaving perfectly good [more]

Re: Control Panel: Trend Change?

It is not certain that improving infrastructure would be a net economic benefit over allowing that infrastructure to decline further....which costs us nothing now. Bringing the infrastructure up to code and in into good repair would only return it [more]

The most important aspect of the bust cycle is not the deprivation of so many people. It is that (apparently) this is what it takes for the voters to get angry enough to vote people into office who will enact programs and actions which will remove [more]

Re: Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS)

Ouch. This helps confirm my conclusion that CCS is not a practical solution.

Even if the plant were coming along smoothly and worked great, CCS is still a very limited solution because of the problem of what to do with the captured CO2.

The US economy seems to be chugging along in growth mode, but inflation lags Fed targets and the employment participation rate is still low. So this is no time to start raising rates, especially with the Chinese flu going around.
