California Increases Climate Goals

Gov. Brown announced a tough new interim target for California en route to it's goal of an 80% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050. Brown has now committed CA for cutting emissions 40% by 2030.

The U.S. seems to be behind in developing this technology. Fortunately the U.S. has California.

the more processes you go through the less efficient the overall conversion must be. OTOH the advantages in controlling fugitive emissions might be worth it. Not something I'd really argue... though not sure we could just let the market figure it [more]

The vagaries of the solar cycle are not very predictable. Expectations for the current maximum have bounced around over the last decade, and while the last minimum was the longest and lowest in about a hundred years and this maximum is lower than the [more]

Re: Tesla Battery Economics

I don't see a whole lot of use for them at this time and price, but by bringing the product to mass production and greatly undercutting the price of a custom battery pack, Tesla will expand the niche a bit. Down the road 5 years when their [more]

Storing H2 is HARD. Add a wee carbon impurity (taken from atmosphere so put back doesn't change things) and it is easy (ch4)

Add a wee oxygen to the mix and it stores and transports even easier since it becomes liquid at standard [more]

Re: Why not a plug-in FCV?

Yep, I've talked about this. The problem is cost right now, but it's a technology of the future I think.

I expect a small SOFC running of natural gas or renewable methane will make more sense in the role than a PEM running on hydrogen.

My only complaint, since I don't care about seating five, is that GM skimped on the sound insulation which makes for more road noise than I care for.

Re: Plug-in Electric Vehicles

I guess I still don't see the business case for mainstream adoption of electric vehicles, especially with gas prices back under $3.00.

Nor do I at the moment. It's still a niche market largely dependent on government subsidy. But, as [more]
