Electric Buses Will Win

Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturer BYD seems to be absolutely crushing it with their electric buses (EBs). Factories going up in multiple locations, with reports of thousands of sales in China already. [more]

Majority of Americans Support Carbon Tax

A majority, even a super-majority, of Americans support a carbon tax now, if the revenue is specified to be spent in popular ways.

60% support a carbon tax when revenues are specified to be spent on research and development of renewable [more]

Re: Dr Easterbrook makes a fool of himself

The Baur study is hardly worth mentioning, since it only covers 10 years and ends on 2011, which year is decisively below recent trend. Sea level rise has recovered to trend in recent years, 2011 was an outlier and the trend 2002-2011 is not [more]

Re: Dr Easterbrook makes a fool of himself

Regarding Gregory et al. and their finding of no acceleration attributable to global climate change, I find very questionable their decision to attribute the recent accelerated contribution of Greenland ice sheet to global sea level rise to [more]

Re: Dr Easterbrook makes a fool of himself

There is enough inter-annual variation in global sea level that I'd be skeptical of drawing any conclusion from a 10 year trend, especially one that ends on 2011, which was a noticeable dip below trend - since reversed.

Re: A statistical approach

Seems to me stochastic modeling might help to clarify the uncertainty, but can hardly be expected to add any accuracy. Chaotic elements of the climate system mean that we have to rely on probabilistic estimates of future climate, as per the IPCC [more]

Thanks for the summary, paul.

I mostly was comparing to PV when I wrote that. Solar thermal plants almost certainly are the future for large-scale generation, and seem to be mostly what is being deployed (in the solar industry).

So you rejected at 90% and accepted at 99.9%?

The observed trend in NASA's global surface temperature 1997 through 2013 is significant at 90% significance level: a.k.a. the null hypothesis of a flat trend is rejected using an alpha of [more]

So, as I posted, I did this with the global sea ice data with no change to p value, but since that dataset returns a zero p value I thought maybe I'm missing a change that [more]

Re: Global Sea Ice: Significant Declining Trend

I ran the test again, as jck suggested, with alpha set to .1% (99.9% confidence). The p-value remained unchanged at zero, and, of course, the null hypothesis of a flat trend was rejected.
