Re: Poll: How much time do you spend on...

Denny, re: the chart of TR telling you to stay away from the stock in 2000 is because since 2000, the stock has done nothing. Had you run that "BMW" chart on TR in 2001 after it had been falling from its peak, the chart would be telling you [more]

Re: Poll: How much time do you spend on...

There's a few things I'm concerned about at this point. It doesn't matter what a company did from 1980 to 2014. What a company did from 2000-2014, and the growth it showed, let alone what it did from 1980-2000, is pretty irrelevant. I'm sure a good [more]

Brown-Forman Corporation-How do you value?

I'm starting to think "Value Hounds" is a very appropriate term, because it's nearly impossible to find a stock trading at a reasonable valuation. I'd like to get this board's impresson of the valuation of Brown-Forman Corporation (BF-B). [more]

Re: contrarian view oil & gas

Google shows the market cap as $40 billion. I wonder if all this has to do with taking back all the trusts? Wonder what p/e would be then. Hopefully under 20.

I'm interested in any stock that may fall due to the oil price drop even though [more]

Re: contrarian view oil & gas

One thing that concerns me with KMI is, if their deny is so high, why is their ROE under 10%? Especially if they have any type of moat? They have been spending $1-2 billion a year on Capex over the past few years. The price still baffles me. I see [more]

commoncents, why do you say earnings are not relevant, or not applicable here? I understand this company recently changed the structure and taking back all of it's trusts that are currently out there. But I still do not see how it doesn't apply.

kelbon,

A proven management with wealthy founders is a bet I'd be more willing to take than some regular "cheap" stock.

Re: CBI

I can't find any breakdown in revenue but I read articles from a year ago how CBI was riding the shake oil boom. Shaw seemed to have a focus in oil and gas too. This suggests that if the shale boom slows down, the earnings growth over the past [more]

Re: Poll: How much time do you spend on...

I was thinking of subscribing to Value Line. I think it would be great to get a snapshot of what's going on on 1700 or so companies out there that may give clues that won't show up on a screen, like a company that's about to release a product or show [more]

Sounds like a good company to buy when egg prices are low.

Re: Poll: How much time do you spend on...

What usually happens with me is I will spend hours researching a company and wind up not investing in it. There are thousands of companies traded on the stock exchanges and I'm supposed to somehow narrow that down to the top 20 at best. [more]

Re: Nov Losers continue losing in December too

It's not that bad. Over the last 5 years, DOD +130.92% (+17.4% annualized) vs ^SPXTR (total returns == with dividends reinvested) +107.0% (+15.6% annualized) -- and the latter's only achievable if you pay no taxes on dividends (e.g in an IRA), [more]

If only it were as easy as buying the highest yielding stocks. Nothing in wall street is that obvious. Even dogs of the Dow seems to Be a result of data mining. It's live performance is lackluster. I did read Goodrich petroleum is hedged for the [more]

Re: Anyone dollar cost average?

If I put a limit order for $19.80 and it gaps down to $16, the order would actually be processed for $16.

Normally I would agree. With a 1 shot deal, it would probably make sense to just buy at the market.

But I'm goign to be buying [more]

Anyone dollar cost average?

I've been contributing $500 a month to a Roth IRA. The maximum contribution one can make is $5500 a year to Iras. That seems surprisingly low.

So what I've been doing over the past year is buying $500 a month in the only stock I have [more]

Re: it's 2008 for oil

I read that us oil production has increased 1 million barrels per day over the previous year. That would be your "glut" right there. Who would be the first to go? The high cost operators. I recall when oil was high back in 2008 and earlier. [more]

Re: it's 2008 for oil

Let's just put it this way, I wouldn't want to own a high cost of production farm that was so in debt it needed higher corn prices in the upcoming to survive in order to make it, otherwise the bank would foreclose.

As tempted as I was, I held off buying anything oil related because I don't want to put myself in the position of all-out gambling, ie, buying based on the belief oil prices would jump back up as they always have, knowing oil prices are about as [more]
