Re: Gaps

I'd wager very few gaps show on a weekly chart, let alone a monthly chart. I'd bet when people talk about gaps, they are primarily referring to daily charts. This is the range your "layman" sees everyday and gets up in arms about when he [more]

Re: If I was going to trade stocks: the gap-fill

For many years when I was going off chart patterns, I discounted the theory of gap filling being valid. Stocks do not just swing in one direction or another without retracing, therefore some gaps would be filled just by coincidence. Regardless, gap [more]

Re: AZZ - thinking about selling

I don't follow AZZ but your analysis seems reasonable. If it were me I'd keep the AZZ position until I found something better to invest in, unless you know of one now.

Re: O&G - Biggest Moat

Other than a company with a patent on a certain product used to extract (which I don't know of), the lowest cost producer has the biggest moat when it comes to a commodity. The only thing I know is EOG Resources has highly regarded management in the [more]

Re: What company would you buy in a selloff?

I know one of the guys working for Buffett, that protégé he hired a few years ago, likes MA and V. As Berkshire becomes bigger, I'm not sure which of these stocks owned by the company are truly Buffett stocks or one of the stock bought by [more]

Re: What company would you buy in a selloff?

One of the things that Philip Fisher mentions, and makes a lot of sense, is that if your aim is long term capital appreciation, do not switch in and out of the market, because it is "overvalued" or "undervalued." I've seen enough [more]

Re: What company would you buy in a selloff?

I like the additional stocks mentioned on this thread, V, MA, and CMG. I'm not familiar with UA but have been leery of both clothing brands and clothing retailers as there seems to be a good amount of "fads" in that industry.

As [more]

What company would you buy in a selloff?

Both Peter Lynch and Warren Buffet have made similar comments along the lines of "I'd rather buy a great company at a good price than a good company at a great price." Meaning if a substandard company is trading at a steep discount, it's [more]

Scrap metal prices plummeting

I have a side business of sheet metal fabricating. It means I have left over scrap metal that I'll take to the recyclers. A few months ago, I was getting $170 a pound. Today, I got $60 a pound. I asked what's going on, they said that it's the worst [more]

Re: Interesting losers today

Not that I would ever do it, but if there was ever an IPO I'd short for being overpriced, it would have been GoPro. A camera that you can mount on things? If it's anything more than a niche, what's that to stop Sony and every other company going in? [more]

Re: Oil Price History

What are the odds of the feds shutting CLR and the rest down? I have read about New York putting the clamps down on fracking. If such is the case, I believe frackers should trade at a discount relative to a comparable diversified oil producer.

At $48 per barrel even the saudis are perhaps just slightly above the costs to produce.

Re: Seeking Alpha and BOFI

From what I'm reaading, BOFI took some big positions in discounted RMBS during the middle of the financial crisis. Those purchases are paying off. The downside is they will be less of a factor as BOFI grows, or as they mature. This explains the [more]

Re: Seeking Alpha and BOFI

A bank that returns 1.5% on assets this day and age is not typical. Most banks I see are lucky to break past the 1% mark. WFC has the reputation as a well run bank, because they ARE a well run bank. The fact that BOFI is around the same return on [more]
